Arthur Gea is riding a wave of confidence after claiming back-to-back wins over Ben Shelton and Jakub Mensik, and he has looked physically strong throughout his campaign.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, meanwhile, has endured several gruelling battles in the previous rounds and could be feeling the effects. With his relentless work rate and ability to extend rallies, Gea looks well placed to exploit any signs of fatigue from the Spaniard.

Gea's Rapid Rise Reaches New Heights in Shanghai

  • Gea has a 1-1 record in tour-level quarterfinals in his career.
  • He holds a 7-2 record against top-50 players in 2026.
  • Davidovich Fokina has a 3-2 record in Masters quarterfinals.
  • He has a 20-5 record against players ranked outside the top 50 this year.

Arthur Gea Continues Breakthrough Run With Mensik Upset

Arthur Gea secured his place in the Shanghai Masters quarterfinals after defeating Jakub Mensik in straight sets, 7-6, 6-4. He fired 11 aces and saved both break points he faced during the match.

All four of Gea's matches this week have been closely contested. He dropped a set against Jaime Faria and Ugo Humbert in the early rounds before playing two tiebreaks against Ben Shelton, securing the first top-10 victory of his career.

Before this week, the 21-year-old had played only one Masters event, in Madrid earlier this year, where he failed to win a match. His progress this season, particularly in recent months, has been outstanding.

Until July, Gea had won only three main-draw matches at tour level in his career. However, he has since claimed his maiden tour-level title in Los Cabos, reached the fourth round of the US Open and now advanced to the quarterfinals in Shanghai. These results will see him make his top-50 debut next week.

Fokina's Asian Swing Revival Gathers Pace in Shanghai

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Hubert Hurkacz from a set down, winning 1-6, 6-3, 7-6. He saved nine of the 12 break points he faced, including all four in the deciding set, and converted both break points he created during the match.

Earlier this week, the Spaniard also recorded his first top-10 victory of the season by defeating Frances Tiafoe, despite experiencing physical difficulties during the match. This is his best result in Shanghai, having previously won only two matches across three appearances at the tournament.

Davidovich Fokina struggled with lower-back issues in recent months and skipped the entire North American swing after the grass-court season. However, he quickly rediscovered his rhythm following his return, winning the title in Chengdu before reaching the quarterfinals in Shanghai.

This is his seventh quarterfinal appearance on tour this year, with victories in three of his previous six. At Masters events, he holds a 3-2 record at the quarterfinal stage, including wins in his last two appearances, and will aim to extend that run this week.
