Daniil Medvedev's recent form may have been poor, but he has looked much better at the US Open so far, reaching the round of 16 without dropping a set. His exceptional record at this tournament also deserves plenty of respect, as he is a former champion and has consistently produced some of his best tennis in these conditions.
Frances Tiafoe, meanwhile, underwent minor surgery last month and has looked shaky since returning to the court, which raises further questions about his current level.

Medvedev's New York Form Continues to Improve
Daniil Medvedev secured his place in the second week at the US Open after defeating Arthur Rinderknech in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. He served 10 aces and won 85% of his first-serve points during the match.
This is Medvedev's seventh round-of-16 appearance at the US Open. He has won five of his previous six matches at this stage, with his only defeat coming against Nick Kyrgios in 2022.
The 30-year-old has been boosted by his results this week, losing his serve only once so far. This is a positive sign after he arrived at the US Open with disappointing results, winning only one match across his three lead-up events.
Despite his struggles in recent months, Medvedev produced impressive results earlier this year, including titles in Brisbane and Dubai, a final in Indian Wells and semifinal appearances in 's-Hertogenbosch and Rome.
He has an 11-7 record in Grand Slam round-of-16 matches and will be looking to reach his first Grand Slam quarterfinal at this stage since the 2024 US Open.

Tiafoe Builds Momentum to Reach Another US Open R16
Frances Tiafoe survived a tough five-set encounter against Martin Damm in the first round but has since won his next two matches in straight sets to secure his place in the fourth round. He most recently defeated Valentin Vacherot 6-4, 6-2, 6-4.
This is Tiafoe's sixth second-week appearance at the US Open. He lost his first two matches at this stage but has won his last three and will be looking to extend that record this week.
The American struggled with fitness issues a few weeks ago and also suffered early exits in Montreal and Washington. He underwent cyst removal surgery before bouncing back with a final in Cincinnati, which helped him move back into the Top 15 in the rankings.
Tiafoe has a 5-4 record in Grand Slam round-of-16 matches, winning four of his last five at this stage. His most recent defeat came against Matteo Arnaldi in the fourth round at Roland Garros a few months ago.
