Daniil Medvedev has held the upper hand over Tommy Paul for years, taking four of their five previous meetings. His Asian swing has only strengthened that edge, with the Russian winning 10 of 11 matches.
His lone setback came via a disqualification against Novak Djokovic in the Beijing semifinals rather than being outplayed. Add the fact that Medvedev has lifted this trophy before, and history, form and familiarity are all on his side.
- Medvedev has a 2-1 record in Shanghai quarterfinals.
- He holds a 6-4 record against American players in 2026.
- Tommy Paul has lost both of his Masters quarterfinals this year.
- Paul has a 3-3 record against top-10 players in 2026.

Medvedev Extends Shanghai Resurgence With Tsitsipas Victory
Daniil Medvedev defeated former world No. 3 Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets to reach the quarterfinals in Shanghai, winning 6-4, 7-5. He fired eight aces and did not face a single break point during the match.
This is Medvedev's fourth quarterfinal appearance in Shanghai and his third consecutive one. Apart from his loss to Jannik Sinner at this stage in 2024, he has won both of his other quarterfinals here, lifting the title in 2019 and reaching the semifinals last year.
The Russian struggled to make deep runs after an impressive start to the season, but he has shown encouraging progress in recent weeks. He won the title in Hangzhou, reached the semifinals in Beijing and has now advanced to the last eight in Shanghai.
Medvedev enters this match with an impressive 7-1 record in tour-level quarterfinals this year, including victories in both of his Masters quarterfinal appearances.

Paul Reaches First Shanghai Quarterfinal After Bergs Victory
Tommy Paul advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Zizou Bergs in straight sets, 7-6, 6-4. He saved seven of the eight break points he faced and converted two of the four opportunities he created during the match.
This is an impressive response from the American, who began his Asian swing with a straight-sets defeat in the opening round in Tokyo. It is also his best result in Shanghai, as his previous two fourth-round appearances here ended in defeat.
The 28-year-old has produced solid results throughout the season, including four final appearances, quarterfinal runs in Cincinnati and Miami, and fourth-round finishes at the Australian Open and US Open. Those performances have helped him remain inside the top 20 in the rankings.
Paul holds a 5-2 record in tour-level quarterfinals this year, with both defeats coming at Masters events. He will now look to improve that record as he faces Medvedev for a place in the semifinals.
