Medvedev will need to be wary of Royer’s ability to compete, but his experience and quality should see him through to the next round.
Medvedev Bids For Another Positive Beginning
- Medvedev has a 17–5 record in opening-round matches this year.
- He has a 7–0 record against players outside the Top 100 this year.
- Royer has a 0–5 career record against Top 10 players.
- He has a 1–10 career record in second-round matches on tour.
This will be their first meeting.
Medvedev Targets A Deep Run As Top Seed
Daniil Medvedev had a great opportunity to go deep at the US Open considering his experience and previous success there, but he unfortunately lost to Frances Tiafoe in straight sets in the fourth round.
However, it was still a better result for him considering his disappointing early exits in the previous lead-up events, where he won only one match across three tournaments. He will now look to rebuild his momentum this week.
The former world No. 1 has produced some impressive results earlier this year, including titles in Brisbane and Dubai, a final in Indian Wells and a semifinal in Rome.
This is his second appearance in Hangzhou. Last year, he reached the quarterfinals on his debut and will be looking to make another deep run while entering as the top seed this week.

Valentin Royer Looks To Recreate Last Year’s Run
Valentin Royer registered a straight-set win over Adam Walton to reach the second round in Hangzhou, winning 6-3, 6-4. He served 14 aces and saved all four break points he faced during the match.
Last year, during his debut here, he reached the final after defeating Learner Tien and Andrey Rublev. That remains the only time he has won multiple main-draw matches on tour.
The 25-year-old won more than 60 matches last year but has failed to match those results this season. He has registered multiple main-draw wins only four times this year, with all of them coming in Challenger events. These results have pushed him outside the top 100 in the rankings recently.
