Rafael Jodar has looked the sharper of these two for most of the season, and his hard-court record tells the story: 27 wins from 35 matches against opponents ranked outside the top 20.
Casper Ruud, by contrast, has rarely strung together convincing performances on this surface, and the Norwegian's dip in form leaves him vulnerable against an opponent riding a wave of confidence. Everything points toward the young Spaniard dictating terms here.
Jodar's Consistency Makes Him a Threat in Shanghai
- Jodar has a 1-2 record in Masters quarterfinals.
- He holds a 48-10 record against players ranked outside the top 20 in 2026.
- Ruud is seeking his first Masters semifinal on hard courts since 2022.
- He has a 6-6 record against top-20 players this year.
This will be their first meeting.
Jodar Continues Shanghai Breakthrough With Comeback Victory
Rafael Jodar reached the quarterfinals after defeating Botic van de Zandschulp in three sets, 6-7, 6-4, 6-2. He lost his serve once and broke his opponent four times during the match.
The Spaniard has won all three of his matches this week in a similar fashion, losing the opening set before comfortably winning the next two. Before arriving in Shanghai, he had never won a match in Asia.
The 20-year-old had not won a tour-level match before 2026, but he has quickly demonstrated his ability and potential, with his impressive performances helping him break into the top 15 recently.
This is Jodar's eighth quarterfinal appearance on tour this year, and he has won four of his previous seven. At Masters events, he holds a 1-2 record in quarterfinals, with his only victory at this stage coming in Montreal a few months ago.

Ruud Advances After Auger-Aliassime Retirement
Casper Ruud secured his place in the Shanghai quarterfinals after his opponent, Felix Auger-Aliassime, retired while trailing 2-5 in the opening set. Ruud had previously defeated Bu Yunchaokete and Learner Tien in the earlier rounds.
The Norwegian arrived in Shanghai short of confidence after struggling with fitness issues in recent months. He had also failed to record multiple main-draw wins at an event since the French Open. Reaching the quarterfinals represents his best result in Shanghai.
Aside from his impressive clay-court season, Ruud has struggled to produce consistent results on other surfaces. He has reached five quarterfinals on tour this year, losing three of them. His best result of the season came in Rome, where he reached the final.
