Tommy Paul appears to have hit top gear at the Shanghai Masters, producing two dominant straight-sets victories, including an impressive win over defending champion Valentin Vacherot.
Those performances, combined with Paul's extensive experience at the latter stages of Masters events, give him a significant edge over Zizou Bergs, who faces a tough test against the in-form American.

Paul Looks to Finally Break Through in Shanghai
Tommy Paul eliminated defending champion Valentin Vacherot in straight sets to reach the fourth round in Shanghai, winning 6-4, 6-2. He lost his serve once and broke his opponent four times during the match.
This is Paul's third consecutive fourth-round appearance in Shanghai. He previously reached this stage in 2023 and 2024 but lost to Andrey Rublev and Tomas Machac, respectively. The American will be hoping for a better result this time.
Paul has enjoyed a solid season, recording seven quarterfinal-or-better finishes alongside fourth-round appearances at the Australian Open and US Open. Those results have helped him return to the top 20 in the rankings.
He ended his 2025 season after the US Open, giving him an opportunity to earn valuable ranking points during the upcoming weeks and improve his position. He has made an impressive start to that effort in Shanghai and will look to continue his progress.

Bergs Eyes Second Straight Shanghai Quarterfinal
Zizou Bergs defeated Tokyo champion and world No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets to reach the fourth round in Shanghai, winning 7-5, 7-6. Although he lost his serve twice, Bergs controlled much of the contest and secured the biggest victory of his career.
The Belgian also recorded his first win over a top-three opponent at a Masters event. He is now one victory away from matching his best result in Shanghai, having reached the quarterfinals here last year for his only Masters quarterfinal appearance.
Before the US Open, Bergs had played 10 hard-court events across all levels this year, recording multiple wins in every tournament. He has raised his level on the surface in recent events, reaching the third round at the US Open and now the fourth round in Shanghai.
The 27-year-old has endured numerous early-round exits this season, but occasional strong performances at major events, along with his maiden tour-level title in Eastbourne, have helped him remain comfortably inside the top 50.
