NBA Season Preview 2026-27 - Win Total and Playoff Picks

  • Minnesota and Miami are picked to miss the playoffs due to limited depth and high injury risk.
  • Philadelphia is projected to win under 50.5 games despite a strong roster, mainly due to concerns about key player availability.
  • Charlotte is favored to exceed 38.5 wins, with their deep and flexible roster less vulnerable to injuries.

NBA Season Preview 2026-27: Win Total and Playoff Picks - Betting the Injury Cliff

I'm taking Minnesota to miss the playoffs, Philadelphia Under 50.5 wins, Miami to miss the playoffs and Charlotte Over 38.5 wins.

Every NBA Season preview will tell you what team is good and what team stinks but that's not the question that cashes win totals. The question is what happens to a team when its two best players sit for a month, because over 82 games they usually do.

How I Built This

I started with four independent projection models that don't use betting lines: Opta, Hoopvantage, Prediction Engine and Over The Apron, then I averaged them into one number per team.

Following that I ran a stress test. Using last season's player impact numbers, I measured how many wins each team loses if its top two players miss 20 games each. I call that number the Cliff. The Cushion is how far a team projects above the 8th seed in its conference. When the Cliff is bigger than the Cushion, one bad month can knock that team out of the playoffs.

TeamWin totalModel avg.CliffCushion
Denver48.546.810.35.3
Miami46.542.87.00.0
Philadelphia50.546.36.23.5
Minnesota47.541.65.70.1
Charlotte38.541.73.5-1.1

Denver has the biggest Cliff in the league. Nikola Jokić is worth about 0.4 wins every time he suits up. I'm not betting against a guy who's played 65+ games three years running, but if he goes down, the Nuggets fall harder than anyone.

Minnesota to Miss the Playoffs

The Wolves are priced as an 83% playoff team. The models average 41.6 wins, which puts them right on the play-in line in the West.

The LaMelo Ball trade cost them Julius Randle and Naz Reid, two guys who held the rotation together when bodies went down. Ball has played 22, 47 and 72 games over the last three seasons. Minnesota has almost no margin, and the bench that used to protect it is gone.

Philadelphia Under 50.5 Wins

LeBron and Jaylen Brown make this the most talented Sixers roster in years. It's also built on Joel Embiid, who has played 39, 19 and 38 games over the last three seasons, and on a 41-year-old LeBron.

Even Opta's model, which flags that it may be underrating LeBron, only gets Philadelphia to 42 wins. Backup center Ariel Hukporti is already out for the season with a torn Achilles. Every Embiid night off now means minutes for the thinnest frontcourt depth on the roster.

Miami to Miss the Playoffs

Giannis Antetokounmpo is the most valuable player in the East per game, worth roughly a quarter of a win every night he plays. He also played just 36 games last season.

To get him, Miami sent Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Kasparas Jakučionis to Milwaukee. That's four rotation players for two. Miami's Cliff of 7 wins is the biggest in the East, and its Cushion is zero. If Giannis misses a month, this is a play-in team at best.

Charlotte Over 38.5 Wins

This is the team built to bend, not break. Last season Charlotte went 44-38, but its point differential said 53-29, the biggest gap between results and performance in the league.

LaMelo and Miles Bridges are gone, but Naz Reid, Grayson Allen, Dennis Schröder, Royce O'Neale and Dorian Finney-Smith come in. Charlotte's Cliff is just 3.5 wins, one of the smallest of any team near the playoff line, because nobody on this roster is irreplaceable. Kon Knueppel's hamstring is worth watching, but this is a deep team and losing one player won't sink it.
