Chelsea vs Manchester United Predictions

Chelsea face Manchester United at Stamford Bridge in Saturday's early Premier League fixture.

The hosts are looking to bounce back from their London derby defeat against Tottenham, while United continue to struggle under beleaguered boss Michael Carrick.

A home win looks the likeliest outcome, while I also expect both teams to score.

Chelsea in Better Form

  • Chelsea won 5 of their last 7 home matches
  • Chelsea have seen BTTS in 6 of their last 9 matches
  • Chelsea won 2 of their last 3 home matches against Manchester United
  • Manchester United have seen BTTS in 8 of their last 10 matches against Chelsea
  • Manchester United lost 5 of their last 8 matches
  • Manchester United have seen BTTS in 5 of their last 7 matches

United Edge Recent H2H

Chelsea and Manchester United have met 14 times since 2020. United won five of those encounters, while Chelsea claimed three victories. Six matches finished level.

United secured a 1-0 victory in their most recent meeting at Stamford Bridge in April.

Chelsea Suffer Midweek Cup Exit

Chelsea return to Premier League action after a disappointing EFL Cup exit at Liverpool on Wednesday evening. Xabi Alonso's side played out a 1-1 draw at Anfield before a 6-5 penalty shootout defeat.

Morgan Rogers put Chelsea ahead from the penalty spot in the 40th minute, but Cody Gakpo levelled the contest with his own penalty just a few minutes later.

With the contest level at 1-1 after 90 minutes, Liverpool eventually prevailed 6-5 on penalties, with Wesley Fofana missing the decisive spot kick.

The Blues remained competitive throughout, registering slightly more shots (11-10), despite Liverpool enjoying more possession (52-48%). The hosts also recorded a higher xG total (2.78-1.79) and created more big chances (4-2).

Wednesday's setback followed a 2-0 Premier League defeat against Tottenham at Stamford Bridge last weekend.

Chelsea had previously claimed successive league victories against Bournemouth (5-1) and Everton (2-0),

The free-scoring Blues netted 17 goals in their opening eight Premier League matches, but defensive frailties remain a concern. Alonso's men conceded 15 goals during that period, including eight in four home fixtures.

Manchester United Struggle Under Carrick

Manchester United head to Stamford Bridge after a dismal 3-0 home defeat against Bournemouth last Sunday. Rayan, Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson scored as the Cherries eased to a dominant win at Old Trafford.

United dominated possession (63-37%) and registered more shots (17-10), but Bournemouth created six big chances to the hosts' none and recorded a much higher xG total (2.15-1.17).

Carrick is expected to remain in charge this weekend despite mounting pressure following another poor run of performances. The under-pressure Red Devils boss had seen his side fall to a 4-1 Champions League defeat at Como four days earlier.

The out-of-form visitors have now failed to win each of their last eight matches, with a 4-0 win against Sabah their only success in ten games since the start of September.

A dreadful start to their EPL season has seen the Red Devils take just seven points from eight league fixtures. They remain only one point above the relegation zone ahead of Saturday's game.

Chelsea vs Manchester United Team News

Chelsea: (3-4-2-1) Mike Penders; Josh Acheampong, Maxence Lacroix, Levi Colwill; Malo Gusto, Moises Caicedo, Jordan Henderson, Jorrel Hato; Pedro Neto, Morgan Rogers; Danny Welbeck.

Head coach Alonso has a few absentees this weekend. Top scorer Joao Pedro is sidelined with a thigh injury, while Reece James and Emiliano Martinez are also ruled out.

Cole Palmer is available after serving a domestic suspension in Wednesday's EFL Cup fixture at Liverpool.

"Every time you reach the penalties, someone will feel it is harsh to go out of the competition. It was really close from both sides. Penalties mean it is open to anything.

"They have performed at a good enough level to compete at Anfield. We conceded the penalty, and it was even. The game was really close for both sides.

"It has been a solid performance from Mike (Penders). We didn't concede many chances, but he was quite stable and solid in his performances. That was really important in the first half for us.

"This is football. It is part of our job. We were showing a good level, and this is what it takes to come to these stadiums. The Premier League is the main focus.”

Manchester United: (4-2-3-1) Senne Lammens; Noussair Mazraoui, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Diogo Dalot; Youri Tielemans, Carlos Baleba; Amad Diallo, Bruno Fernandes, Matheus Cunha; Bryan Mbeumo.

Head coach Michael Carrick is expected to make changes to his starting XI on Saturday.

Club captain Bruno Fernandes could return to the side following clear-the-air talks with Carrick earlier this week.

Kobbie Mainoo has returned to training and could feature against Chelsea.

Luke Shaw, Patrick Dorgu, Benjamin Sesko and Manuel Ugarte remain injury concerns, while Marcus Rashford is doubtful.

"It's a tough situation; there's no hiding from it. What it looks like and what's next, I really don't know.

"I will always do my best for the football club, and I won't change that now. I love what I do, and I feel the responsibility - we'll have to wait and see."

Verdict

Both teams will be keen to bounce back from poor results in the past week, but Chelsea should have the edge against their out-of-form visitors.

I have stakes on BTTS and a home win at Stamford Bridge.
