Alexander Zverev has struggled to find consistency throughout this season, and his recent performances have done little to inspire confidence. However, Alex de Minaur has also fallen short of his best level, making the outright market difficult to call.
Given how Zverev's matches have fluctuated throughout his campaign this Shanghai campaign, another closely contested encounter looks likely, with plenty of games potentially on offer.

Zverev Hopes Bublik Victory Sparks a Late-Season Revival
Alexander Zverev secured his place in the quarterfinals after defeating Alexander Bublik in three sets, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6. He saved four set points in the opening set and recovered from a break deficit in the deciding set to complete the victory.
This is Zverev's third quarterfinal appearance in Shanghai and his first since 2019. He won both of his previous quarterfinals here, reaching the semifinals in 2018 and the final in 2019.
The 29-year-old reached at least the quarterfinals in each of his first four Masters events this year but failed to achieve the same result in his next four tournaments at this level. He will be looking to end that run and return to the latter stages in Shanghai.
Zverev has a significant opportunity to finish the season strongly and strengthen his bid to reach world No. 1. However, his performances this week have raised some concerns, and he will need to raise his level to make a deep run.

De Minaur Chases a Landmark Masters Semifinal Appearance
Alex de Minaur reached the Shanghai quarterfinals after defeating Karen Khachanov in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. He saved the only break point he faced and converted two of the three opportunities he created during the match.
There have been concerns about De Minaur's fitness since he retired during the final in Beijing. However, he has benefited from a favourable draw in Shanghai, receiving a first-round bye and a walkover against Alex Molcan. The extra rest appears to have helped him regain his level, as reflected in his recent performances.
The Australian has reached eight quarterfinals or better this year, but only two of those results came at Masters or Grand Slam events, highlighting his difficulties in the biggest tournaments.
De Minaur enters this clash with a 2-7 career record in Masters quarterfinals and is currently on a four-match losing streak at this stage. He will be eager to improve that record as he faces Zverev for a place in the semifinals.
