Alexander Zverev has struggled to find his best level in recent matches and faces a tricky opponent in Alexander Bublik, who has historically enjoyed success in this matchup.
With the Kazakh leading their head-to-head 3-1, he has good reason to believe he can trouble Zverev again. Another competitive encounter looks likely, with the potential for a tight set or even a tiebreak.

Zverev Survives Halys Test to Reach Fourth Round
Alexander Zverev defeated Quentin Halys in a tight three-set encounter to reach the fourth round in Shanghai, winning 6-4, 6-7, 6-3. He had a couple of match points in the second-set tiebreak but failed to close out the match in straight sets, forcing him to play a decider.
This is Zverev's sixth appearance in the round of 16 in Shanghai. He has failed to convert three of his previous five appearances at this stage, with his most recent success coming in 2019, when he reached the final.
The German has enjoyed an impressive season, recording 10 semifinal-or-better finishes, including title-winning runs at Roland Garros and the US Open, as well as a final appearance at Wimbledon. These results have helped him return to the top 2 of the rankings.
Zverev now has an opportunity to challenge for the world No. 1 position with deep runs in the coming weeks. He missed a chance to make progress last week in Beijing, losing to Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals, and will now look to bounce back with another strong run in Shanghai.

After defeating Tomas Machac in straight sets in the opening round, Alexander Bublik overcame another tough opponent, Brandon Nakashima, in a three-set comeback to reach the fourth round, winning 6-7, 6-3, 7-6. He fired 22 aces and did not face a single break point during the match.
The victory should provide a confidence boost for Bublik, who had never won a match in his previous three appearances in Shanghai. He also arrived this week on a three-match losing streak, including an opening-round defeat in Beijing last week.
The Kazakh has struggled to replicate his level from last season and lost significant ranking points, particularly during the clay-court swing, which recently pushed him outside the top 20.
Bublik has reached the round of 16 at Masters events seven times in his career, progressing to the quarterfinals on four occasions. One of those runs came at Monte Carlo earlier this year. He will now aim to reach another Masters quarterfinal in Shanghai.
