Carlos Alcaraz may still be finding his rhythm after returning from his injury break, with the Spaniard yet to look completely settled after a few demanding matches.
However, Matteo Arnaldi has also endured his share of fitness problems this season, which could give Alcaraz an opportunity to take control and produce a more convincing performance.
Alcaraz Seeks To Continue His Tokyo Winning Run
- Alcaraz has an unbeaten 6–0 record in Tokyo.
- He has a 19–1 record against players outside the Top 20 in 2026.

Carlos Alcaraz Starts Tokyo Title Defence With Comeback Win
Carlos Alcaraz kicked off his title defence with a tough three-set win over Alex Michelsen in the opening round in Tokyo, 7-6, 4-6, 6-1. He squandered a 4-2 lead in the second set but regained control in the decider to finish the match dominantly.
The former world No. 1 made an impressive start to the season by winning titles at the Australian Open and Doha, while also reaching the semifinals in Indian Wells and the final in Monte Carlo before a wrist injury halted his progress.
He recently returned to the court after missing more than four months and posted an encouraging result at the US Open by reaching the quarterfinals. That was a positive result given his lack of match play, although he missed the opportunity to defend his title. He also helped Team Europe clinch the Laver Cup title a few weeks ago.
Last year, he played only one event during the Asian swing, which came here in Tokyo, where he won the title. He will now have another opportunity to earn valuable ranking points in the coming weeks.

Matteo Arnaldi Fights Back To Reach Tokyo Second Round
Matteo Arnaldi defeated Rei Sakamoto from a set down to reach the second round in Tokyo, winning 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. After losing the opening set, he was in complete control during the next two sets, including saving both break points he faced in the deciding set to seal the victory.
The Italian has struggled with fitness issues this year, which have significantly affected his performances on tour. He did not win a main-draw match at any level until May this year.
The 25-year-old has played 17 events across all levels this year, with 14 of them ending without multiple main-draw wins. Despite that, his breakthrough semifinal run at Roland Garros, Cagliari Challenger title and third-round appearance in Rome have helped keep him inside the top 50 in the rankings.
