David Goffin fed off the energy of the Brussels crowd to stun Remy Bertola in the first round of what is the final tournament of his career. It was an emotional moment for the Belgian, but it would be a stretch to read too much into it.

His overall level remains well short of what is needed to trouble someone of Alex Michelsen's calibre. The American has the power and consistency to take control early, and the farewell story looks likely to end here.

Michelsen Eyes Another Deep Run After Convincing Opener

  • Goffin is seeking his first tour-level quarterfinal since Munich last year.
  • He had not recorded a main-draw win at any level in 2025 before this week.
  • Michelsen is targeting his fifth tour-level quarterfinal of the year.
  • Michelsen holds a 16-2 record against players ranked outside the top 100 in 2026.

Goffin Ends Long Wait For A Main-Draw Win On Home Soil

David Goffin defeated Remy Bertola in a comeback victory to reach the second round in Brussels, winning 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. He trailed 0-3 in the deciding set before fighting back to secure the win in front of his home crowd.

This was Goffin’s first main-draw victory at any level since the Shanghai Masters last year. After enduring recurring knee problems, the Belgian announced his retirement earlier this year, making this tournament in Brussels his final professional appearance. Securing a victory in front of his home supporters was a special moment, and he will now look to extend his farewell campaign.

Goffin last reached a tour-level quarterfinal in Munich last year. Having finally returned to winning ways, the veteran will be motivated to build on this emotional first-round triumph.

Michelsen Looks To Build Momentum After Ending Losing Streak

Alex Michelsen defeated Andrea Guerrieri in straight sets to reach the second round in Brussels, winning 6-1, 6-2. He did not face a single break point and broke his opponent four times during the match.

The victory ended Michelsen’s three-match losing streak and gave him his first win since the US Open. He reached the semifinals in Almaty at this stage last year and will look to produce another strong run to defend those ranking points.

Most of Michelsen’s notable results this season have come in North America, including fourth-round appearances at Indian Wells and Miami, quarterfinal runs in Washington and at the US Open, and several strong performances on the Challenger Tour.

The American is now looking to extend his success beyond North America and is targeting his fifth tour-level quarterfinal of the season.

Verdict

Home support can only carry Goffin so far, and Michelsen should be too strong. Backing him to win in straight sets is the main play, with Michelsen -4.5 games on the handicap also looking a confident selection.
