Han Shi Seeks to Turn Guangzhou Wildcard Into a Deep Run
Han Shi received a main-draw wildcard this week and defeated Alevtina Ibragimova 6-4, 6-4 to reach the second round in Guangzhou. She trailed 2-4 in the first set and 1-3 in the second before fighting back to seal the match in straight sets.
This is her fourth main-draw win on tour in her career. She had previously cleared the opening round at tour level three times, but failed to progress further on each occasion. Most recently, she lost to Leylah Fernandez in Wuhan a few weeks ago.
The 21-year-old has won more than 60 hard-court matches this year, including nine semifinal or better results on the ITF circuit, a quarterfinal appearance at the WTA 125 event in Ankara, and a main-draw win in Wuhan.
These results have helped her climb more than 250 places in the rankings since the start of the season and reach a career-high ranking of 162 recently.

Yastremska Searches for Consistency After a Difficult Season
Dayana Yastremska trailed 3-5 in the deciding set and saved five match points against Xiaodi You in the first qualifying round earlier this week. She produced a similar comeback against Katie Volynets in the first round, trailing 2-5 in the decider and saving five match points to reach the second round.
The 27-year-old Ukrainian has struggled significantly this year. Apart from her third-round runs in Brisbane and Beijing, her other tour-level appearances have ended in or before the second round, leaving her hovering around the top 100 in the rankings.
She is now seeking her first tour-level quarterfinal since Eastbourne last year and her first in Asia since 2019.

Verdict
Dayana Yastremska has the experience advantage, but her struggles and inconsistency this year remain concerns. Han Shi has won more than 60 matches on hard courts this season, and her recent main-draw win in Wuhan provides a confidence boost. She offers value as a potential upset pick in this clash.
