Holger Rune has played just four matches since returning from injury this year, and he remains a long way from his best. Both his fitness and his confidence are still clearly in the rebuilding phase.

Quentin Halys, meanwhile, has been in terrific form over recent months and has consistently produced highly competitive tennis. The Frenchman looks well equipped to exploit Rune’s current vulnerabilities and turn this into a real opportunity for an upset.

Halys Looks to Take Advantage of Rune’s Difficult Comeback

  • Rune has reached at least the semifinals in all three of his previous appearances in Basel.
  • He is yet to win a tour-level match this year, having lost both matches since his return from injury.
  • Halys has won at least one match in eight of his last 10 events.
  • He has a 15-8 record against lower-ranked players this year.

Rune Chases a Turnaround at a Familiar Basel Venue

Holger Rune was sidelined for 11 months due to an Achilles injury and returned to tennis only a few weeks ago. He won two matches during the Davis Cup but failed to win a match in either of the two tour-level events he entered, most recently losing to Daniel Altmaier in Shanghai after taking the opening set.

The Dane skipped Brussels last week due to a back injury, suggesting that he has yet to fully recover. His lack of match practice in recent months has also made it difficult to find his rhythm, and he will look to build some momentum this week.

Rune has played here in Basel three times before and reached at least the semifinals on all three occasions, including the final on his debut in 2022.

Halys Looks to Capitalize on Recent Progress in Basel

Quentin Halys is coming off the Asian swing with encouraging results. He gradually raised his level, losing in the first round in Hangzhou, reaching the second round in Beijing and progressing to the third round in Shanghai. He will look to build on that momentum this week.

After failing to defend points early in the year, Halys dropped outside the top 100 in the rankings. However, he gradually rediscovered his rhythm and began producing results from May onward. His achievements include winning the title in Kitzbuhel, reaching the quarterfinals in Eastbourne and Gstaad, and making the third round at the French Open and in Shanghai. He recently returned to the top 50 and matched his career-high ranking of 46.

With no points to defend, Halys has an excellent opportunity to improve his ranking further with solid results over the remainder of the season. He lost in the opening round here last year to Casper Ruud, but his improved form gives him hope of a better result this time.

Verdict

Rune’s lack of match sharpness makes Halys an appealing option here. Backing Halys to win is the main play, with a tiebreak in the match also looking a strong addition.
