Hubert Hurkacz

Hubert Hurkacz is enjoying an excellent Asian swing, winning plenty of matches and recently claiming a notable victory over Novak Djokovic. His confidence should be high heading into this clash, while Alexander Davidovich Fokina faces questions over his physical condition after struggling during his third-round match against Frances Tiafoe in Shanghai.

With Hurkacz in strong form and seemingly holding the physical advantage, the even-money price on the Pole looks difficult to ignore.

Hurkacz Faces A Crucial Test Against Fokina

  • Hurkacz has a 1–1 record in Round of 16 matches in Shanghai.
  • He has a 16–15 record against higher-ranked opponents this year.
  • Fokina is seeking his first hard-court Masters quarterfinal since 2023.
  • He has won 13 of his last 15 matches against players outside the Top 20.

Hurkacz Builds Confidence With Consistent Results in China

Hubert Hurkacz advanced to the fourth round in Shanghai after defeating Yi Zhou in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. He fired 18 aces and saved three of the four break points he faced during the match.

This is Hurkacz's third consecutive round-of-16 appearance in Shanghai. He lost at this stage in 2019 but went on to win the title in his most recent appearance in 2023.

After returning from injury earlier this year, the Pole struggled to find his level, winning only one tour-level match during the first three months of the season. He also dropped out of the top 100 after failing to defend his ranking points from last year.

However, Hurkacz has bounced back impressively in recent months, reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon and the third round in Montreal. He has been even more successful during the ongoing Asian swing, reaching the final in Chengdu and the semifinals in Beijing. His run in Shanghai has further strengthened his position, confirming his return to the top 30 in the rankings.

Davidovich Fokina Hopes Fitness Holds Up in Shanghai Challenge

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina advanced to the fourth round in Shanghai after defeating Frances Tiafoe in a three-set battle, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6. However, the Spaniard also experienced physical issues and took a medical timeout during the match, which could be a concern heading into his next challenge.

Davidovich Fokina made a solid start to the season but encountered fitness problems early on. He bounced back with an impressive grass-court campaign, winning his maiden tour-level title in Mallorca and reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon and the quarterfinals at Queen's Club.

However, further fitness issues halted his progress and sidelined him for another two months, forcing him to miss the entire North American swing. After returning to competition in Hangzhou, he immediately made an impact by winning the title, defeating Hurkacz in the final.

The Spaniard has made four appearances at Masters events this year, but none has resulted in a quarterfinal berth. He will now aim to reach the last eight at this level for the first time since Monte Carlo in 2025 and for the first time on hard courts since Toronto in 2023.
