This will be their first meeting.
Tjen Makes Strong Start to Chennai Title Defence
Janice Tjen kicked off her title defence with a dominant straight-set win over Katherine Hui in the first round, 6-1, 6-2. She lost her serve once and broke her opponent six times during the match.
Last year, on her Chennai debut, Tjen lifted her maiden tour-level title. That remains her most recent quarterfinal appearance at any level, and she will now look to defend those ranking points this week.
The Indonesian has played 29 events across all levels this season but registered multiple main-draw wins in only two of them. Those campaigns included third-round appearances in Doha and Wuhan, highlighting her struggles to build on promising starts this year.

Garland Seeks to Build on Opening Win Despite Recent Struggles
Joanna Garland began her campaign with a straight-set victory over Jil Teichmann, winning 6-3, 6-4 to reach the second round in Chennai. She lost her serve twice in the second set and needed five match points to close out the contest.
This was only her second tour-level main-draw victory of the season. A few weeks ago, she reached the second round in Singapore but lost to Xinyu Wang in straight sets. She will now look to produce a better result and defend the semifinal points she earned in Chennai last year.
Garland has struggled with injury problems this season and has played only a limited number of events. However, she has claimed a couple of lower-level titles, including the WTA 125 event in Canberra earlier this year.

Verdict
Considering Garland’s fitness concerns and inconsistent form in recent months, Tjen has a good opportunity to continue her title defence with another victory this week.
