Fernandez Hopes to Finally Reach Wuhan's Last Eight
Leylah Fernandez advanced to the round of 16 in Wuhan after defeating local favourite Han Shi in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. She trailed 1-4 in the second set before mounting a comeback to seal the victory in straight sets.
This is Fernandez's second round-of-16 appearance in Wuhan across three visits. She first reached this stage on her debut in 2023 but lost to Qinwen Zheng in three sets. The Canadian will now aim to reach the quarterfinals for the first time at this tournament.
Fernandez reached three quarterfinals on clay earlier this year, in Madrid, Stuttgart and Strasbourg. Outside those runs, she did not record multiple main-draw wins at another event before the North American swing.
However, she raised her level in recent months, reaching the fourth round in Toronto and the third round at the US Open before winning the title in Singapore. She will now look to build on that success by reaching her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal on hard courts since Cincinnati in 2024.

Ostapenko Shows Fighting Spirit to Overcome Pegula
Jelena Ostapenko defeated former finalist and world No. 3 Jessica Pegula from a set down to reach the third round in Wuhan, winning 2-6, 7-6, 6-3. She came back from a set and a break down on two occasions and saved three match points before completing the remarkable victory.
This marks Ostapenko's first consecutive tour-level wins since her third-round run at Wimbledon. It was also her third victory over a top-10 opponent this year from six matches against players in that ranking group.
The 29-year-old has struggled with consistency for much of the season but has produced several notable results, including semifinal appearances in Doha and Eastbourne, a quarterfinal run in Rome and a fourth-round finish in Miami. Those performances have helped her remain around the top 30 in the rankings.
Ostapenko is now seeking her fifth quarterfinal appearance on tour this year and her first on hard courts since Doha earlier in the season.
