Luca Van Assche has been outstanding on indoor hard courts this year, winning 14 of his 16 matches on the surface. His run to the quarterfinals in Lyon last week shows he arrives with plenty of momentum behind him.

Learner Tien, by contrast, is coming straight off the Asian swing and may need time to adjust to the indoor conditions. That transition could hand Van Assche the chance to make a fast start and put the American under early pressure.

Van Assche Carries Lyon Confidence Into Vienna Debut

  • Van Assche has failed to win a match in five of his last seven tour-level events.
  • He has a 1-11 career record against top-20 players.
  • Tien has lost four of his last six matches on tour.
  • He has a 24-14 record against players ranked outside the top 20 this year.

Van Assche Returns to Form After Difficult Hard-Court Campaign

Luca Van Assche is coming off a successful campaign in Lyon, where he reached the quarterfinals before losing to Lorenzo Musetti in three sets. It was his first tour-level hard-court quarterfinal in three years, and he will look to build on that result this week.

Before his run in Lyon, he played 10 hard-court tournaments this year and won only one main-draw match combined, highlighting his struggles on the surface at this level.

The 22-year-old may not be the most consistent player on tour, but his breakthrough results helped him achieve a career-high ranking of 40 a few months ago. He won his maiden tour-level title in Estoril and reached the quarterfinals in Marrakech.

The Frenchman has posted impressive indoor hard court results this year across all levels, winning 14 of the 16 matches he has played, including two Challenger titles. He will look to improve that record this week while making his debut in Vienna.

Tien Aims to End Recent Setbacks on a Familiar Surface

Learner Tien has faced some tough opponents in the early rounds of recent tournaments, resulting in early exits, and will look to rebuild his momentum this week. He lost to Hubert Hurkacz in the opening round in Beijing and to Casper Ruud in the third round in Shanghai.

Apart from a disappointing grass-court season and some early exits during the clay-court swing, he has posted impressive results this year. These include winning the title in Geneva, reaching the semifinals in Montreal, the quarterfinals at the Australian Open and Indian Wells, and the fourth round in Rome and at the US Open. Those results helped him achieve a career-high ranking of 12 a few months ago.

The 20-year-old American has an impressive career record on indoor hard courts, winning 32 of the 44 matches he has played on the surface. He has won at least 10 matches on indoor hard courts in each of the last three years and will look to continue that streak this season.

Verdict

The opening set looks the best window to target Van Assche while Tien settles in. Backing him to win the first set is the main play, with Van Assche +1.5 games on the first-set handicap offering a safer route.
