Chwalinska Builds On Hard-Court Revival In Wuhan
Maja Chwalinska advanced to the quarterfinals in Wuhan after defeating Iva Jovic in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. Although she lost her serve once, she controlled most of the match to secure a convincing victory.
This is arguably the biggest win of Chwalinska’s career so far. Before this week, she had recorded only one victory at a WTA 1000 event, which came in Cincinnati a few months ago. She has now reached her first quarterfinal at this level.
Chwalinska enjoyed a breakthrough at Roland Garros by reaching her maiden final, but she struggled to maintain that momentum, losing five of her next six matches. However, she has gradually rediscovered her rhythm on hard courts, reaching the semifinals in Singapore a few weeks ago.
She has reached three tour-level quarterfinals this year and won two of them. Her only defeat at this stage came against Emma Raducanu earlier in the season in Cluj-Napoca.

Sakkari Eyes A Return To The Wuhan Semifinals
Maria Sakkari defeated Mia Pohankova in straight sets to secure her place in the Wuhan quarterfinals, winning 6-1, 6-4. She lost her serve twice but broke her opponent five times during the match.
This is Sakkari’s second quarterfinal appearance in Wuhan. During her debut in 2017, she progressed to the semifinals after defeating Alizé Cornet at this stage. She will now look to reproduce that run this week.
The Greek has been solid in the early rounds of tournaments this year but has struggled to maintain her level against stronger opposition. Nevertheless, she remains ranked around the top 35 after reaching the semifinals in Doha, the final in Athens and the quarterfinals in Singapore, alongside multiple third-round appearances at high-profile events.
Sakkari has an impressive record in WTA 1000 quarterfinals, winning 11 of her 15 matches at this stage. Her most recent victory came in Doha earlier this year.
