Ugo Humbert has the quality and experience to be a real threat indoors, and the fast conditions in Basel suit his attacking left-handed game perfectly. On his day, the Frenchman can trouble anyone on a surface like this.

Novak Djokovic, though, has returned to Basel for the first time in nearly 15 years with one clear goal: sealing his place at the ATP Finals. That level of motivation should help him find a way through, even if Humbert makes him work hard for it.

Djokovic Targets a Winning Return to Basel

  • Djokovic has reached at least the semifinals in all three of his previous appearances in Basel.
  • He has a 13-5 record against players ranked outside the top 20.
  • Humbert has lost six of his last seven matches.
  • He has a 4-6 record against top-20 players this year.

Djokovic Relies on Basel Record to Boost ATP Finals Hopes

Novak Djokovic has struggled with fitness issues throughout the season, stalling his progress and pushing him outside the top 10 for the first time since 2018.

Despite his physical problems and ongoing recovery, he managed to win a title in Beijing, extending his remarkable record there to seven consecutive titles and maintaining his perfect record in the Chinese capital. However, he struggled to handle the workload after that title-winning campaign, suffering early exit in shanghai in the following week.

Djokovic would usually skip indoor events at this stage of the season, but with ATP Finals qualification still within reach, he needs deep runs in Basel and Paris next week. He will look to make the most of his opportunity this week.

This is his fourth main-draw appearance in Basel, and he has reached at least the semifinals on all three previous occasions, including his title-winning run in 2009.

Humbert Seeks to Reverse Recent Slide in Basel

Ugo Humbert raised his level during the grass-court season, reaching the semifinals at Queen's Club and the final in Eastbourne. Those results helped him return to the top 30 in the rankings.

However, he failed to build on that progress in the following weeks, with his level dropping significantly. He has won only two matches across his last seven events and is now looking to end his recent struggles.

The 28-year-old has played in Basel four times before and reached at least the second round on all four occasions. He also reached the semifinals in alternating appearances, most recently in 2025.

Verdict

Djokovic should edge this, but a straightforward win looks unlikely. Backing him on the -2.5 games handicap is the main play, with a tiebreak in the match and over 2.5 sets both offering strong value.
