Taylor Fritz is some way off his best form at the moment, but he has plenty to play for with a place at the ATP Finals still on the line. That added motivation should help him dig in, even on days when his game isn't fully clicking.

Pierre-Hugues Herbert is well past his prime and unlikely to sustain the level needed to pull off an upset. Still, with both men capable of holding serve comfortably, the sets could be decided by very fine margins.

Fritz Aims To Maintain Dominance Against Outside Top 100

  • Herbert had not won a tour-level main-draw match in over a year before this week.
  • He is seeking his first quarterfinal on tour since 2023.
  • Fritz reached at least the quarterfinals in both of his previous Lyon appearances.
  • He holds a 7-1 record against players ranked outside the top 100 in 2026.

Herbert Looks To Revive His Season On Home Soil

Pierre-Hugues Herbert defeated Sebastian Baez in straight sets to reach the second round in Lyon, winning 6-3, 6-4. It was a more comfortable performance than his back-to-back three-set comeback victories in the qualifying rounds.

The Frenchman ended an eight-match losing streak in tour-level opening-round matches and recorded his first main-draw win at this level since Stuttgart last year.

Herbert has competed in 18 events across all levels this season. Apart from reaching the final at the Saint-Brieuc Challenger, he has struggled to produce notable results, with his inconsistent campaign pushing him close to dropping out of the top 300 in the latest rankings.

Fritz Targets Lyon Revival After Recent Ranking Slide

Taylor Fritz has struggled to find his rhythm in recent weeks, suffering early exits in both of his latest Asian campaigns. He lost in the opening round in Tokyo before exiting in the third round in Shanghai.

The American dealt with knee problems earlier this year that disrupted his progress, but he bounced back impressively with a title in Washington, final appearances in Stuttgart and Halle, and quarterfinal runs at Wimbledon and Cincinnati.

Despite those strong results, Fritz has recently slipped outside the top 10 in the rankings. He is making his third appearance in Lyon, having reached the quarterfinals in 2018 and the semifinals in 2019. He will now look to rediscover his best form and make another deep run at the tournament.

Verdict

Fritz should have enough to get through without dropping a set, but expect him to be pushed in the service games. Backing Fritz in straight sets makes sense, with over 21.5 games and a tiebreak in the match.
