Canelo Alvarez vs John Ryder Preview & Picks

‘Canelo’ is many, many levels above his opponent, and that is likely to be clear for all to see here.

  • 4 of Canelo Alvarez’ last 6 wins have come by KO/TKO
  • Canelo Alvarez has stopped 6 of his last 7 British opponents
  • 4 of Alvarez’s last 6 stoppages have been after round 6

Canelo Alvarez Form

Saul Alvarez is the defending WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, WBO and Ring magazine middleweight champion with a professional record of 58-2-2 (39 KOs).

‘Canelo’ established himself as the pound-for-pound number one as he rebounded from his first career defeat – a majority decision defeat to Floyd Mayweather Jr in September 2013.

He beat Alfredo Angulo (10th round TKO), Erislandy Lara (split decision) and James Kirkland (3rd round KO) to earn a shot at the WBC and Ring magazine middleweight titles.

Alvarez took his chance, defeating Miguel Cotto by unanimous decision, and in his first defeat he knocked out Amir Khan in the sixth round.

The 32-year-old Mexican then dropped back down to light-middleweight to knock out Liam Smith in the ninth round to win the WBO title.

From there here beat Julio Cesar Chavez by unanimous decision, setting up two huge fights with Gennady Golovkin.

The first meeting, in September 2017, went to a split decision draw, but a year later ‘Canelo’ won the rematch by majority decision.

Alvarez moved up to super-middleweight in his next outing to stop Rocky Fielding inside three rounds, before dropping back down to middleweight to decision Daniel Jacobs for the WBA (Super), WBC, IBF and Ring magazine titles.

‘Canelo’ stepped up the light-heavyweight in his next fight and beat Sergey Kovalev by 11th round knockout to claim the WBO title, but quickly returned to super-middleweight.

He beat Callum Smith by unanimous decision, Avni Yildirim by third-round stoppage, Billy Joe Sunders by eighth-round stoppage and Caleb Plant by 11th round stoppage over the next couple of years.

Alvarez moved back up to light-heavyweight in May 2022 but saw his win streak come to a shocking end with a unanimous decision defeat to WBA (Super) champion Dmitry Bivol.

He bounced back from that loss that September though, wining his trilogy fight with Golovkin by unanimous decision.

John Ryder Form

John Ryder is a former world title contender who takes a professional record of 32-5 (18 KOs into this fight.

Ryder spent much of his career fighting at domestic level, challenging for British, Commonwealth and other minor titles.

He challenged for a world title for the first time in November 2019, when he took on WBA (Super) and Ring magazine super-middleweight champion Callum Smith.

The 34-year-old Londoner came up short on the night, dropping a unanimous decision to the Liverpudlian.

Ryder has rebounded from that defeat though, reeling off four consecutive wins to land this shot at Canelo Alvarez.

He beat Mike Guy by unanimous decision in December 2020, and in his sole outing of 2021 he backed it up with a fifth round stoppage of Jozek Jurko.

The British fighter then made it three-in-a-row with the biggest win of his career in February 2022, upsetting Daniel Jacobs by a controversial split decision.

Ryder then took his win streak to four fights in his second outing of 2022, stopping Zach Parker in the fifth round to win the vacant WBO interim super-middleweight title.

Verdict

It is simple – Alvarez is many levels above his opponent in this fight.

‘Canelo’ is likely to go on a ‘scouting mission’ at first, and once he has Ryder worked out he is backed to take him out in ruthless fashion.
