Josh Taylor vs Teofimo Lopez Preview & Picks

Josh Taylor is tipped to retain his world titles via decision.

Teofimo Lopez has a puncher’s chance, but Taylor is the superior technician with great fight IQ.

A smart, calculated performance is likely to get the job done, with the judges being required.

  • Josh Taylor has a perfect 19-0 record
  • Taylor has gone the distance in 4 of his last 5 fights
  • Teofimo Lopez is 1-2 in his last 3 fights
  • Lopez’s sole career defeat came by decision

Josh Taylor Form

Josh Taylor is the reigning WBO and Ring Magazine light-welterweight champion with a 19-0 record (13 KOs).

Taylor became a world champion for the first time in May 2019 when he best Ivan Baranchyk via unanimous decision to win the IBF title.

Then, in the final of the World Boxing Super Series, he beat Regis Prograis by majority decision to add the WBA (Super) and Ring Magazine titles.

The 32-year-old maintained his perfect record in September 2020, retaining his three belts with a first-round knockout of Apinun Khongsong.

That set up a big unification clash with WBC and WBO champions Jose Ramirez in May 2021, and Taylor took his big chance.

He became the first British fighter in the four-belt era to become undisputed champion of a division, besting Ramirez by unanimous decision.

In his first defence of his undisputed crown in February 2022, Taylor claimed a highly controversial split decision win over Jack Catterall.

The Scottish fighter has not competed since, and as a result he no longer holds the WBA (Super), WBC or IBF titles.

Teofimo Lopez Form

Teofimo Lopez is a former unified lightweight champion with a professional record of 18-1.

Lopez became a world champion for the first time in December 2019 when he stopped Richard Commey inside two rounds to win the IBF lightweight title.

He then produced the biggest performance of his career to add the WBA (Super), WBO and Ring Magazine titles with a unanimous decision win against Vasyl Lomachenko.

However, the 25-year-old New York failed to make a successful defence of those four titles.

Lopez suffered a split decision defeat to George Kambosos Jr in November 2021 – the only defeat of his career so far.

He was able to rebound when he returned to the ring in August of last year, stopping Pedro Campa in the seventh round in his light-welterweight debut.

The former lightweight world champion than earned a split decision win against Sandor Martin last December to set up this world title fight.

Verdict

Josh Taylor will be eager to silence the doubters after his rough outing against Jack Catterall.

He is the more skilled of these two boxers, with a size and experience advantage, so we expect a better showing from the champion here.
