Houston Open Preview & Picks
The world's best players are back in Texas to contest the latest round of the PGA Tour. Who will walk away with the honours at the Houston Open?

Jason Kokrak will not be back to defend his title after winning in 2021.

Past and present major winners in the field include Stewart Cink, Jason Day, Jason Dufner, Hideki Matsuyama, Justin Rose, Scottie Scheffler, Jimmy Walker, Danny Willett, and Gary Woodland.

These are our top four picks that could win the title this tournament.

Scottie Scheffler

After a meteoric rise to number one in the world golf rankings, Scottie Scheffler has slipped back one position after a winless second half of the year.

However, he looked back to his best after his blistering final round this past weekend at the World Wide Technology Championship, placing T3 overall.

The 26-year-old had a superb start to his year, finishing T25 at the American Express, T20 at the Farmers Insurance Open, victory at the Phoenix Open, T7 at the Genesis Invitational and winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational before finishing T55 at the Players Championship.

Scheffler continued his impressive winning streak, capturing the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play title and his first major at the Masters.

His subsequent six starts were excellent, placing T18 at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, T15 at the AT&T at the Byron Nelson, MC at the PGA Championship, T2 at the Charles Schwab Challenge, T18 at the RBC Canadian Open and T2 at the US Open.

Scheffler's form became erratic, but he still achieved top results, placing T13 at the Travelers Championship, MC, T21 at the Open Championship, MC, T3 at the BMW Championship, T2 at the Tour Championship and MC at the CJ Cup in South Carolina.

The American has performed well at the Houston Open, finishing T28 in 2019, T32 in 2020, and T2 last year.

Scheffler showed signs he is ready to win again and will fancy his chances to secure his first PGA Tour title since April.

Maverick McNealy

After missing the cut in his first tournament of the new 2022/23 season on the PGA Tour, Maverick McNealy has reeled off four excellent results.

The 27-year-old placed T10 at the Shriners Children's Open, T12 at the ZOZO Championship, T18 at the CJ Cup in South Carolina and T10 at the World Wide Technology Championship this past weekend.

Before that, McNealy had a solid start to his year, placing T27 at the Sony Open in Hawaii, T30 at the Farmers Insurance Open, T33 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and T7 at the Genesis Invitational before finishing 73rd at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

He continued to have decent results, finishing T46 at the Players Championship, 17th at the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play, T35 at the Valero Texas Open, T26 at the RBC Heritage, T32 at the AT&T Byron Nelson, and T75 at the PGA Championship before missing the cut at the Charles Schwab Challenge and the Travelers Championship.

The American regained his touch, placing T8 John Deere Classic, T16 at Genesis Scottish Open and T9 at the Barracuda Championship.

His form was fair after those results, finishing T49 at the 3M Open, MC at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, T31 at the FedEx St. Jude Championship and T32 at the BMW Championship.

He has played at the Houston Open three times, placing T17 in 2019, T20 in 2020, and T19 in 2021.

McNealy has been thereabouts lately and will be in the mix in Texas this weekend.

Taylor Montgomery

Taylor Montgomery has hit the ground running in his first season on the PGA Tour, achieving excellent results.

Montgomery placed T3 at the Fortinet Championship, T9 at the Sanderson Farms Championship, T15 at the Shriners Children's Open, T13 at the CJ Cup in South Carolina and T10 at the recent World Wide Technology Championship.

Before that, the 27-year-old American had an accomplished 2021/22 season on the Korn Ferry Tour, placing inside the top five on six occasions and having three top-ten finishes in 17 tournaments.

He is making his debut at the Houston Open.

Montgomery has been holding form in his last ten tournaments, racking up four top-five places and three top-ten finishes, giving him the confidence to win his maiden PGA Tour title this weekend.

Matthew NeSmith

Matthew NeSmith has been in great touch at the start of the new PGA Tour season and is the long-shot value bet at the Houston Open.

NeSmith missed the cut at the Fortinet Championship but bounced back to form by placing T9 at the Sanderson Farms Championship, T2 at the Shriner Children's Open, and T9 at the ZOZO Championship.

Before that, NeSmith struggled to find any rhythm with results of MC at the American Express, T34 at the Farmers Insurance Open, didn't finish at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, MC at the Phoenix Open, T55 at the Genesis Invitational Open, T25 at the Honda Classic and MC at the Players Championship.

The American returned to form by placing T3 at the Valspar Championship, MC at the Valero Texas Open, T12 at the RBC Heritage and T4 at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

His subsequent ten starts were poor to mediocre, finishing T31 at the Wells Fargo Championship, T51, T57, T37 at the Memorial Tournament, T37 at the US Open, T19 at the Travelers Championship, MC, T72, T36 at the Wyndham Championship and MC at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.

The 29-year-old has made three appearances at this event, missing the cut back-to-back in 2019 and 2020 before finishing T46 last year.

McNealy has found consistency in recent starts and can cause an upset at the Memorial Park Golf Course.

Verdict

Scheffler has claims for the Houston Open after his recent performance.

McNealy has turned the corner and will fancy his chances to take home the trophy.

Montgomery has carried his form with him from the Korn Ferry Tour into the PGA Tour and can win his maiden title at the Memorial Park Golf Course.

NeSmith is holding form and is the long-shot value bet this weekend.
