LIV Golf Mayakoba Preview & Picks
The LIV Golf Series has added more tournaments to the schedule this year, with the players contesting the season opener in Playa del Carmen. Who will walk away with the honours at Mayakoba this weekend?

Six new players have defected to LIV Golf for the second season, with world number 35 Thomas Pieters, Mito Pereira, Sebastian Munoz, Brendan Steele, Dean Burmester and Danny Lee all featuring this weekend.

Past and present major winners in the lineup include Cameron Smith, Bubba Watson, Patrick Reed, Louis Oosthuizen, Charl Schwartzel, Henrik Stenson, Bryson DeChambeau, Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia, Dustin Johnson, Martin Kaymer, Brooks Koepka and Graeme McDowell.

These are our selections that could win the title this weekend.

Paul Casey

Paul Casey had excellent results on LIV Golf Series last season, placing T6 in Bedminster, T21 in Boston, T21 in Chicago, T3 in Bangkok, T5 in Jeddah and T5 at the recent Saudi International (Asian Tour).

Before that, the Englishman finished T25 at the CJ Cup, T16 at the SMBC Singapore Open (Asian Tour), T12 at the Dubai Desert Classic, T15 at the Genesis Invitational, 72nd at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and 3rd at the Players Championship.

Casey has been knocking hard and will fancy his chances to win the LIV Golf Invitational Mayakoba event come Sunday.

Thomas Pieters

Thomas Pieters expressed his frustration at not being invited to the recent Genesis Invitational, which prompted his decision to join the LIV Golf Series.

The Belgian has been holding form on the DP World Tour since August last year by placing T8 at the D+D Real Czech Masters, T23 at the BMW PGA Championship, T3 at the Open de France, T28 at the Alfred Dunhill Links, MC at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship and T6 at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic.

Other performances the 31-year-old achieved last year include winning the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, T9 at the Soudal Open, T10 at the Dutch Open, T27 at the US Open, 2nd at the BMW International Open and T28 at the Open Championship.

Pieters is making his debut on the LIV Golf tour, and his consistency on the golf course could be rewarded with the tournament victory in Mexico.

Mito Pereira

Mito Pereira has been in great touch on the golf course lately, placing T4 at the Shriners Children's Open, T45 at the ZOZO Championship, T18 at the CJ Cup, 2nd at the Dunlop Phoenix Tournament (Japan Tour), T6 at the Saudi International and T11 at the International Series in Oman.

Other notable results achieved by the 27-year-old on the PGA Tour last year include finishing T15 at the Genesis Invitational, T13 at the Valero Texas Open, T17 at the AT&T Byron Nelson, T3 at the PGA Championship, T7 at the Charles Schwab Challenge and T13 at the Memorial Tournament.

Pereira is making his debut on the LIV Golf Series and has the form to win at the El Camaleon Golf Course.

Bernd Wiesberger

Bernd Wiesberger produced average to solid results on the LIV Golf Series Tour last season, placing T43 in London, T37 in Portland, T31 in Bedminster, T17 in Boston, T35 in Chicago, T33 in Bangkok, and T8 in Jeddah.

The Austrian has looked better in his last five tournaments, finishing 2nd at the International Series in Egypt, T50 at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, T20 at the Dubai Desert Classic and T18 at the Saudi International.

Wiesberger has been threatening to produce top performance in recent outings and is the long-shot value bet in Mexico.

Format

An invitational field of 48 golfers will feature at the tournament, with a total purse of $25 million up for grabs. A title of $4 million will go to the winner, while the player coming in last will pocket $120,000.

The players will contest 54 holes instead of the traditional 72 for all the LIV Golf Invitational Series events.

A shotgun start will occur, where the players will tee off simultaneously from different holes.

A 12-four-man team format will run concurrent, with the top three teams earning prize money.

Verdict

Casey has been in contention to win lately and can go all the way at the El Camaleon Golf Course.

Pieters has a point to prove and has the form to win the LIV Golf Invitational Mayakoba tournament.

Pereira has been producing consistent results and can get over the finish line in Mexico.

Wiesberger has decent form and should enter calculations this weekend.
