The final event of the controversial LIV Golf Invitational Series tournament sees the players team up in Florida to compete for the $50 million purse. Which team will lift the trophy come Sunday?
Adrian Otaegui has replaced Hideto Tanihara, whilst Shaun Norris makes way for Hennie Du Plessis.
Past and present major winners in the lineup include Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Cameron Smith, Patrick Reed, Charl Schwartzel, Graeme McDowell, Louis Oosthuizen, Henrik Stenson, Bryson DeChambeau, Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia and Martin Kaymer.
These are our team selections that could win the title this weekend.
Team 4 Aces
Dustin Johnson has been the stand-out player in the LIV Golf Series, achieving excellent results, placing 8th in London, T3 in Portland, T2 in Bedminster, victory in Boston, T2 in Chicago, T15 in Bangkok and T5 in Jeddah.
Patrick Reed had an outstanding first season on the breakaway tour, placing T3 in Portland, 5th in Bedminster, T31 in Boston, T12 in Chicago, runner-up in Bangkok, and T12 in Jeddah.
Talor Gooch featured prominently throughout the series, placing 9th in London, 7th in Portland, T6 in Bedminster, T35 in Chicago, T20 in Bangkok and T12 in Jeddah.
Pat Perez had an average foray on the LIV Golf Invitational Series, finishing T29 in Portland, T31 in Bedminster, T15 in Boston, T31 in Chicago, 40th in Bangkok, and 46th in Jeddah.
Team 4 Aces will receive a bye into the quarter-finals, which start on Saturday.
Team Stinger
Louis Oosthuizen had a solid debut on the LIV Golf Series, producing top results. Oosthuizen placed T10 in London, 5th in Portland, T19 in Bedminster, T9 in Boston, T6 in Chicago, T45 in Bangkok, and T28 in Jeddah.
Charl Schwartzel was the first-time winner of the inaugural LIV Golf Invitational Series event in London. His performances were modest to good after that victory, finishing T37 in Portland, T17 in Bedminster, T35 in Boston, T6 in Chicago, T27 in Bangkok, and T8 in Jeddah.
Branden Grace had an impressive start to his venture on the LIV Golf Series, placing T3 in London before securing the title in Portland. He has been consistent since his triumph, finishing T13 in Bedminster, 12th in Boston, T18 in Chicago, WD in Bangkok and T28 in Jeddah.
Hennie Du Plessis featured at three events on the LIV Golf Series, finishing runner-up in London, T29 in Portland, and T44 in Bedminster.
Team Stinger will also receive a bye into the quarter-finals.
Team Smash
Brooks Koepka returned to his best in Jeddah, securing his maiden LIV Golf Invitational Series title. Before that, Koepka placed T16 in Portland, T11 in Bedminster, T26 in Boston, T21 in Chicago and T8 in Bangkok.
Jason Kokrak was solid on the golf courses of the breakaway series, finishing T26 in Bedminster, 7th in Boston, T21 in Chicago, T27 in Bangkok and T21 in Jeddah.
Peter Uihlein has been in superb touch at the LIV Golf Series tournaments, going close to lifting a trophy on three occasions. Uihlein placed T3 in London, T40 in Portland, T23 in Bedminster, T44 in Boston, T2 in Chicago, T20 in Bangkok and runner-up in Jeddah.
Chase Koepka would have been happy with his first season on the LIV Golf Series tour, finishing T33 in London, T23 in Portland, T17 in Bedminster, T31 in Boston, T8 in Chicago, T33 in Bangkok and T12 in Jeddah.
Team Punch
Cameron Smith went from winning the 150th Open Championship at St Andrews to joining the LIV Golf Invitational Series and maintaining his level of play on the golf course by placing T4 in Boston and victory in Chicago before finishing T41 in Bangkok and T21 in Jeddah.
Marc Leishman has produced average results in the few tournaments he has played, finishing T26 in Boston, T44 in Chicago, T10 in Bangkok and T35 in Jeddah.
Matt Jones has been thereabouts on the LIV Golf Series tour, placing T25 in London, T16 in Portland, T19 in Bedminster, T26 in Boston and T16 in Chicago.
Wade Ormsby has not produced any fireworks in his first season on the LIV Golf Invitational Series, finishing T22 in London, T35 in Portland, 46th in Bedminster, 43rd in Boston, T37 in Chicago, T27 in Bangkok and T35 in Jeddah.
Format
The top four seeded teams receive a bye, whilst the 5th through to 12th seeded teams compete in match-play competitions on Friday. Two singles matches and one alternate-shot foursome match will take place.
The four team winners from Friday merge with the top four seeds to play in the same format on Saturday. Four teams earning two points will advance to Sunday’s championship round.
All 16 players will compete in twosomes on Sunday, with the team captains playing together, and all four scores count towards the team’s final score. The team with the lowest score is the LIV Golf Invitational Series Team Champion.
Verdict
Team Stinger boasts two LIV Golf Invitational Series winners in their midst and will fancy their chances to win the team title in Florida.
Team Smash will look to in form Brooks Koepka and Peter Uihlein to lead from the front in their challenge for the trophy in Miami.
Team Punch players Smith and Leishman have tasted success in a team event in the past at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and could upstage the others with victory on Sunday.
