The CJ Cup Preview & Picks
An elite field of the world's best golfers converges in South Carolina to contest the CJ Cup in the latest round of the PGA Tour. Who will lift the trophy come Sunday?

Rory McIlroy is back to defend his title after his victory in 2021.

Past and present major winners in the lineup include Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler, Justin Thomas, Matt Fitzpatrick, Jordan Spieth, Shane Lowry, Colin Morikawa, Hideki Matsuyama, Jason Day, Webb Simpson, Danny Willett, Gary Woodland and Lucas Glover.

These are our four selections that could win the title this weekend.

Rory Mcllroy

Rory McIlroy began his 2021/22 season on the PGA Tour with a victory at the CJ Cup, and he is in great shape to win this tournament back-to-back.

The Northern Irishman also pocketed two titles in 2022, lifting the trophies at the RBC Canadian Open and the Tour Championship.

The 33-year-old achieved many other notable results during the year by placing 3rd at the Dubai Desert Classic, second at the Masters, 5th at the Wells Fargo Championship, 8th at the PGA Championship, T5 at the US Open, 3rd at the 150th Open Championship, T8 at the BMW Championship, T2 at the BMW PGA Championship, 4th at the Italian Open and T4 at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

The world's number two-ranked golfer finished T21 on his first attempt at winning the CJ Cup in 2020 before securing the title last year.

McIlroy has been ultra-consistent and can win the CJ Cup for the second year in a row.

Jon Rahm

Jon Rahm returned to winning ways when he won the recent Open de Espana on the DP World Tour, his second title in 2022.

Rahm did not have a great start to last season on the PGA Tour, missing the cut at the Fortinet Championship before bouncing back by placing second at the Tournament of Champions.

He then placed T14 at the American Express, T3 at the Farmers Insurance Open, T10 at the Phoenix Open, T21 at the Genesis Invitational, T17 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and T55 at the Players Championship in his next six starts.

The Spaniard showed some inconsistency on the golf course but still produced excellent results, finishing T9 at the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play, T27 at the Masters, victory at the Mexico Open, T48 at the PGA Championship, T10 at the Memorial Tournament, T12 at the US Open, T55 at the Scottish Open and T34 at the 150th Open Championship.

The 27-year-old golfer has been in great touch since August, placing T5 at the FedEx St Jude Invitational, T8 at the BMW Championship, T16 at the Tour Championship and T2 at the BMW PGA Championship.

The former world number one ranked golfer finished T17 on debut at this tournament last year.

Rahm's top performances in recent months paid off with another title, and he can win again if he maintains his level of play on the golf course.

Viktor Hovland

Viktor Hovland was a three-time winner in the 2021/2022 season, clinching the World Wide Technology Championship, the Hero World Challenge and the Dubai Desert Classic.

The 24-year-old's other accomplishments include placing T4 at the Abu Dhabi Championship, T4 at the Genesis Invitational, T2 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and T9 at the Players Championship.

Hovland's form became erratic on the golf course, finishing T33, T18 at the WGC Dell Technologies World Match Play, T27 at the Masters, T29, T41, T21 at the Charles Schwab Challenge, T51, MC, and missing the cut at the Genesis Scottish Open.

The Norwegian bounced back with a top performance at the Open Championship, placing T4 and has been threatening to win since that result.

He finished T20 at the FedEx St Jude Championship, T35 at the BMW Championship, T15 at the Tour Championship, T5 at the BMW PGA Championship, T34 at the Italian Open, and T5 at the ZOZO Championship last weekend.

The world's number 11-ranked golfer has performed well at the CJ Cup in the past, placing T12 in 2020 and T18 last year.

Hovland has had two top-five places in his last three starts and looks ready to return to winning ways.

Tom Hoge

Tom Hoge has begun well on the new PGA Tour season, placing T12 at the Fortinet Championship, T4 at the Shriners Children's Open and T9 at the ZOZO Championship this past weekend.

Before that, Hoge had an excellent 2021/22 season on the PGA Tour, with his more notable achievements being victory at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, second at the American Express, T4 at the RSM Classic, T4 at the 3M Open, T9 at the PGA Championship and T10 at the season-ending Tour Championship.

The 33-year-old American golfer has played at this event twice, finishing T38 in 2020 and T32 last year.

Hoge is the long-shot value bet at the CJ Cup, as he has had one top-five place and two top-ten finishes in his last four tournaments.

Verdict

McIlroy has been knocking hard and claims to lift the trophy come Sunday.

Rahm has looked his best of late and will fancy his chances to win back-to-back tournaments.

Hovland has the form to win another PGA Tour title in his career at the CJ Cup.

Hoge has been thereabouts in recent starts and can cause an upset in South Carolina this weekend.
