World Wide Technology Championship Preview & Picks - Best Picks For Mexico
- The World Wide Technology Championship takes place between November 3-6
- The tournament takes place at the El Camaleon Golf Club, Playa del Carmen, Mexico
- Our four selections who could win on Sunday
The PGA Tour and a host of the world's best players head to Mexico for the second time this year with the World Wide Technology Championship up for grabs.
Viktor Hovland is back to defend his title after winning his second successive World Wide Technology Championship in 2021. Will there be a first three-time winner, or will a new champion emerge?
Past and present major winners in the lineup include Scottie Scheffler, Collin Morikawa, Jason Day, Danny Willett, Lucas Glover, Francesco Molinari, and Jason Dufner.
These are our four selections that could lift the trophy this weekend.
Viktor Hovland
Viktor Hovland was outstanding at the start of 2022, placing T4 at the Abu Dhabi Championship, victory at the Dubai Desert Classic, MC, T4 at the Genesis Invitational, T2 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and T9 at the Players Championship.
The Norwegian's form was the mixed in finishing T33 at the Valspar Championship, T18 at the WGC Dell Technologies World Match Play, T27 at the Masters, T29 at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, T41, T21 at the Charles Schwab Challenge, T51, MC at the US Open and MC at the Genesis Scottish Open.
The 25-year-old returned to form, placing T4 at the 150th Open Championship, T20 at the FedEx St Jude Championship, T35 at the BMW Championship, T15 at the Tour Championship, T5 at the BMW PGA Championship, T34 at the Italian Open, T5 at the ZOZO Championship and T21 at the CJ Cup.
Despite missing the cut in 2018, and 2019, the current world number 11 loves this golf course, winning back-to-back titles in 2020 and 2021.
Hovland has the form and experience gained from winning this tournament twice to mount a significant attempt to three-peat at the El Camaleon Golf Club.
Billy Horschel
Billy Horschel had an excellent beginning to this year on the PGA Tour, placing T23 at the Tournament of Champions, T36 at the Sony Open in Hawaii, T11 at the Farmers Insurance Open, T6 at the Phoenix Open, T16 at the Honda Classic, T2 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, T9 at the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play, 43rd at the Masters and T21 at the RBC Heritage,
His form dipped when finishing 68th at the PGA Championship and missing the cut at the Charles Schwab Challenge. He returned to winning ways at the Memorial Tournament before missing the cut at the US Open.
The 35-year-old's subsequent six tournaments were mixed, finishing T26 at the BMW International Open, MC, T21 at the Open Championship, T27 at the Wyndham Championship, MC and T35 at the BMW Championship.
The American has found form and consistency of late, placing T21 at the Tour Championship, T9 at the BMW PGA Championship, T10 at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship and T7 at the CJ Cup in South Carolina.
The world number 16 ranked golfer has made seven appearances at this event, placing T13, T30, MC, T21 in 2018, T8 in 2019, T5 in 2020, and T33 last year.
Horschel has three top-ten places in his last three starts and has a proven record at the World Wide Technology Championship, giving him the confidence to win the title in Mexico.
Aaron Wise
Aaron Wise had a challenging first few months on the PGA Tour, MC at the Farmers Insurance Open and Phoenix Open, finishing T67 at the Genesis Invitational, MC at the Honda Classic, T17 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, T50 at the Players Championship and MC at the Valspar Championship.
Wise found his touch around the greens in his subsequent five events, placing T21 at the RBC Heritage, T6 at the Mexico Open, T51 at the AT&T Byron Nelson, T23 at the PGA Championship and runner-up at the Memorial Tournament.
The American continued to perform well on the PGA Tour, finishing T27 at the US Open, MC, T34 at the Open Championship, T13 at the Wyndham Championship, T31 at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, T15 at the BMW Championship, T13 at the Tour Championship, T64 at the Shriners Children's Open and 6th at the CJ Cup in South Carolina.
He has played well at this tournament, finishing T55 in 2016, MC in 2017, T10 in 2018, MC in 2019, and runner-up in 2020.
Wise will fancy his chances to go one better and win the title at Mayakoba, as he has been thereabouts in recent tournament starts.
Emiliano Grillo
Emiliano Grillo has had a promising start to his 2022/2023 season on the PGA Tour, placing T25 at the Fortinet Championship, T5 at the Sanderson Farms Championship, T73 at the Shriners Children's Open, 4th at the ZOZO Championship and T45 at the CJ Cup in South Carolina.
Before that, the 30-year-old had a difficult first half of 2022, missing the cut on nine occasions in 16 events, with his positive outcomes being T21 at the Genesis Invitational, T33 at the Mexico Open, T32 at the Memorial Tournament and T28 at the RBC Canadian Open.
The Argentine rediscovered his form on the golf course, placing T2 at the John Deere Classic, MC at the Open Championship, T2 at the 3M Open, T31 at the FedEx St Jude Championship and T19 at the BMW Championship.
He had made six appearances at the World Wide Technology Championship, placing T10 in 2016, T9 in 2017, 15th in 2018, T41 in 2019, T8 in 2020, and MC in 2021.
Grillo offers excellent value as he has been in solid form and has performed well at this event in the past.
Verdict
Horschel has been threatening to win of late and has claims for the title at the El Camaleon Golf Club.
Wise has found consistency and will be challenging for the title come Sunday.
Grillo has had two top-five places in four starts and has featured prominently at World Wide Technology Championship before.
