The Cubs went into the All-Star break on the back of a win and having been victorious in eight of their previous 11 games.
They then lost their first two games when the season resumed, 6-2 and 3-0 to Arizona, before rebounding to beat the Diamondbacks 2-1 and Milwaukee 3-1.
Chicago failed to build on that as they lost the next two games against the Brewers, 1-0 and 3-2, and those losses were followed by a 6-0 defeat in Kansas City.
The Cubs rebounded to take the next two games though, beating the Royals 9-4 and 7-3 before heading to Cincinnati.

Cincinnati came into this series in poor form, having been beaten in six of their previous nine games.
The Reds entered the All-Star break on the back of a 3-2 defeat to Miami that ended a three-game win streak.
They then returned to action in Washington and were swept by the Nationals in a three-game series, losing 8-5, 5-4 and 5-2.
Cincinnati rebounded when they moved on to Atlanta, winning back-to-back meetings with the Braves, 4-1 and 9-4.
The Reds then made it three-in-a-row with a 3-2 victory at Tampa Bay, only to then lose the next two meetings with the Rays, 4-0 and 2-1.
Verdict
Kyle Hendricks has struggled all season long, and those struggles are expected to continue against Cincinnati.
