St Louis come into this series looking to build on back-to-back victories in their last series against San Diego.
The Cardinals lost five straight in mid-August and then failed to build on a 5-2 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers as they lost their next two games.
They did avoid a third straight loss though, beating Milwaukee 10-6, and that proved to be the start of a three-game winning run that saw them beat the Brewers 3-0 and win 6-1 in Minnesota.
St Louis’ run was ended by a 6-0 defeat to the Twins, but they did rebound to win the series finale, 3-2.
The Cardinals then returned home to face San Diego in a four-game series, and bounced back from 7-4 and 7-5 defeats with 4-3 and 4-1 victories.
New York Yankees Form
New York enter this series looking to rebound from a couple of defeats in Washington earlier this week.
The Yankees began the second half of August with a 3-0 win in Detroit, only to then lose their next two meetings with the Tigers, 4-0 and 3-2.
Their losing skid reached three games with a 9-5 home defeat to Cleveland, but they did stop the rot against the Guardians, reeling off 8-1 and 6-0 wins.
New York then played host to Colorado and sandwiched a 9-2 defeat to the Rockies with 3-0 and 10-3 victories.
The Yankees went back out on the road after that series, and failed to build on a 5-2 win over Washington as they lost the final two games in the series, 4-2 and 5-2.
Verdict
St Louis have been in better form this week and pitcher Erick Fedde has a solid ERA despite spending a chunk of time with the White Sox earlier this season.
