Sterling has responded to his first-round knockout loss with an eight-fight win streak that propelled him to the top of the division.
He started the run with a unanimous decision win against Brett Johns, which was followed by a second-round submission victory over Cody Stamman.
‘The Funk Master’ then beat Jimmie Rivera and Pedro Munhoz, before tapping out Cory Sandhagen in the first round to earn a shot at the bantamweight title.
Sterling beat Petr Yan by disqualification following an illegal knee in the fourth round, and claimed a split decision over the former champion when the two men met in a rematch.
He then made his second successful defence of the title with a second-round TKO win against TJ Dillashaw last October.

Henry Cejudo is a former UFC flyweight and bantamweight champion who boasts a professional record of 16-2 (8 KOs).
Cejudo lost back-to-back fights in 2016 when he was stopped by Demetrious Johnson and then dropped a split decision to Joseph Benavidez.
He rebounded from those setbacks in impressive fashion though, reeling off six consecutive wins and becoming a two-weight champion.
‘The Messenger’ got back to winning ways by stopping Wilson Reis in the second round, and followed that up with a unanimous decision victory over Sergio Pettis.
That set up a rematch with Johnson for the flyweight title, and Cejudo took his shot with a split decision victory.
The 36-year-old American then knocked out TJ Dillashaw just 32 seconds into his first defence, before stepping up to the bantamweight division.
Cejudo challenged for the title in his first outing in his new weight class, and he was able to dethrone Marlon Moraes with strikes in the third round.
He then stopped Dominick Cruz by TKO in the second round in his final fight before retiring in May 2020.

Cejudo has been out of the Octagon for a long time, but he walked away in his prime in 2020.
