Amanda Nunes vs Irene Aldana Preview & Picks
Amanda Nunes is tipped to retain her bantamweight title.
Irene Aldana has fight-finishing power, but Nunes is the better all-round fighter with better accuracy.
She also has a lot more experience in five-round fights, so a successful defence looks likely.
- Amanda Nunes has won 13 of her last 14 fights (8 by stoppage)
- 6 of Nunes' last 8 bantamweight fights went over 2.5 rounds
- Irene Aldana is 0-2 in five-round fights
- Nunes has 51% striking accuracy (Aldana 39%)
- Nunes averages 2.61 takedowns per 15 minutes (Aldana 0.20)
Amanda Nunes Form
Amanda Nunes is the reigning UFC bantamweight and featherweight champion with a professional record of 22-5 (13 KOs, 4 Subs).
Nunes has held UFC gold ever since she submitted Miesha Tate in the first round at UFC 200 in July 2016.
‘The Lioness’ quickly established herself as the best female fighter in MMA as she retained the bantamweight title with wins over a string of big names.
She knocked out Ronda Rousey in 48 seconds, before beating Valentina Shevchenko by split decision and Raquel Pennington by fifth round TKO.
Nunes then produced a spectacular 51-second stoppage of Cris Cyborg to win the featherweight title and become the first female fighter to hold UFC titles in two weight classes at the same time.
The 35-year-old Brazilian returned to the bantamweight division for her next two fights, knocking out Holly Holm in the first round before beating Germaine de Randamie by decision.
Nunes then went back to the featherweight division for a unanimous decision win against Felicia Spencer and a first-round submission of Megan Anderson.
Her run as a two-weight world champion finally came to a surprise end in December 2021 though, when she was submitted in the second round by Julianna Pena to lose the bantamweight belt.
Nunes claimed afterwards that she was still struggling with the after-effects of COVID-19 in that fight, and when the two met in the rematch she added some substance to that claim.
She beat Pena by unanimous decision to regain the UFC bantamweight crown.
Irene Aldana Form
Irene Aldana is the #5 ranked contender in the bantamweight division with a career record of 14-6 (8 KOs, 3 Subs).
Aldana entered the UFC in December 2016 and got off to a rough start as she dropped decisions to Leslie Smith and Katlyn Chookagian.
She was able to kick-start her career though, following up decision wins against Talita Bernardo and Lucie Pudilova with a third-round submission win against Bethe Correia.
The 35-year-old Mexican’s streak was halted by a split deicision defeat to Raquel Pennington, but she quickly rebounded.
Aldana bested Vanessa Melo by unanimous decision before knocking out Ketlen Vieira in the first round.
She was unable to make it three-in-a-row though, losing to Holly Holm via unanimous decision in her first five-round fight since signing with the UFC.
Aldana has bounced back from that loss though, and she has done it in violent fashion.
She got back to winning ways with a first-round TKO of Yana Kunitskaya, and followed that up with a third-round knockout of Macy Chiasson.
Verdict
Amanda Nunes is not only the better all-round fighter, she is simply the GOAT of women’s MMA.
Irene Aldana is the not the first ‘wrecking ball’ she has faced, so we expect another successful outing for ‘The Lioness’.
