Brandon Royval vs Tatsuro Taira Preview & Picks

Tatsuro Taira is tipped to win the biggest fight of his career so far by submission.

Brandon Royval’s striking could cause early problems, but it at some point Taira is likely to get him to the mat.

When he does, we expect Taira to work his way towards a submission finish.

  • Tatsuro Taira has a perfect 16-0 professional record
  • 5 of Tatsuro Taira’s last 7 stoppage wins have been by submission
  • Brandon Royval has lost 7 times in his career
  • Brandon Royval has only a 40% takedown defense

Brandon Royval Form

Brandon Royval is the #1 ranked flyweight contender with a career record 16-7 (4 KOs, 9 Subs).

Royval debuted in the UFC in 2020 and made an immediate splash by earning ‘Fight of the Night’ honors for his second-round submission wins over Tim Elliott and Kai Kara-France.

His momentum was brought to a shuddering halt when he was knocked out in the first round by Brandon Moreno, and he was then tapped out by Alexandre Pantoja in the second.

The 32-year-old American got his career back on track in 2022 though, starting with a split decision win over Rogerio Bontorin.

Royval backed up that victory with a first-round submission of Matt Schnell that earned him further ‘Fight of the Night’ honors.

‘Raw Dawg’ then made it three wins in a row in April 2023, earning the ‘Performance of the Night’ bonus for a first-round knockout of Matheus Nicolau.

That earned Royval a shot at the flyweight title, but he came up short as he dropped a unanimous decision to Alexandre Pantoja last December.

He rebounded in February though, edging a split decision win over Brandon Moreno to avenge his 2020 defeat.

Tatsuro Taira Form

Tatsuro Taira is the #5 ranked flyweight contender with a perfect professional record of 16-0 (5 KOs, 7 Subs).

Taira compiled a 10-0 record on the domestic scene before signing a deal with the Ultimate Fighting Championship in 2022.

He made his debut in May of that year and earned a unanimous decision win over Carlos Candelario.

The 24-year-old Japanese fighter then backed that up with a couple of submission wins, tapping out CJ Vergara in the second round and Jesus Santos Aguilar.

Taira’s sequence of stoppage wins ended in July 2023, but he still had his hand raised as he beat Edgar Chavez by unanimous decision.

He then knocked out Carlos Hernandez in the second round to set up a meeting with top contender Alex Perez in June of this year.

Taira won that fight too, when Perez sustained a knee injury as the Japanese fighter tried to end the contest.

Verdict

This is the biggest test of Tatsuro Taira’s career to date, but we expect him to pass it.

It feels like only a matter of time before he gets Brandon Royval to the mat, and when he does we expect him to showcase his submission skills to finish it.
