Villanova vs Houston Preview & Picks

Houston are tipped to cover as they advance to the final four of March Madness.

‘Defense wins championships’ is an old saying, and no team has played better ‘D’ than the Cougars.

They just powered past #2 Arizona and are now backed to knock out another top 10 team.

  • Houston are on a 6-game win streak
  • Houston are 11-2-0 ATS in their last 13 games
  • Houston have covered in each of their last 6 games
  • Houston are 2-0-0 ATS vs top-10 ranked teams this season
  • Villanova are 2-6-0 ATS in their last 8 games after a successful cover

Head To Head

  • The all-time series is tied 3-3
  • Houston won 79-49 when the teams last met in 1991

Villanova Form

Villanova are riding an eight-game win streak heading into the Elite Eight of March Madness.

The Wildcats’ streak includes a successful showing in the Big East conference tournament earlier this month.

They downed St John’s (NY), #20 Connecticut and Creighton in a series of closely contested games to win it.

Villanova have enjoyed much more convincing wins in March Madness though, starting with an 80-60 win over Delaware.

The Wildcats followed that up with a 71-61 win over Ohio State and a 63-55 victory against Michigan.

Jermaine Samuels led the way against the Wolverines with 22 points and seven rebounds.

Justin Moore registered 15 points, four rebounds and four assists, while Collin Gillespie contributed 12 points and six boards.

Villanova are shooting 43.7% while averaging 72.5 points per game.

They are allowing opponents to shoot 43.7% from the floor while giving up 62.7 points per game.

Houston Form

Houston wrapped up the regular season with a loss, but they have been on a tear since then.

The Cougars have won six straight games to clinch the AAC conference tournament and reach the Elite Eight of March Madness.

This streak started with a string of convincing wins to clinch the tournament crown – 69-56 against Cincinnati, 86-66 against Tulane and 71-53 against Memphis.

Houston followed that up with a routine 82-68 victory over UAB in round one of March Madness.

The defense then shut down #19 Illinois in a 68-53 win before holding #2 Arizona to just 53 points in a 72-60 victory.

Jamal Shead top-scored for Houston in the win over Arizona, scoring 21 points while dishing out six assists.

Kyler Edwards had 19 points and five rebounds, while Josh Carlton contributed 10 points and seven boards.

Houston are shooting 46.9% from the field to average 75.7 points per game.

The Cougars are allowing 41.0% from the floor and giving up 59.0 points per game, ranking them third in the nation in both areas.

It is hard to bet against a Houston team that are playing outstanding defense and are in great form.

Villanova have been inconsistent offensively at times, and that is likely to spell trouble for them here.
