The Penguins lost three straight games in the first half of January, before snapping that losing sequence with a 6-3 victory over Philadelphia.
They then responded to a 4-3 defeat to Columbus with one of their best runs of the season, as they won six consecutive games.
Pittsburgh went out on the road to beat Seattle 6-3, Calgary 4-1, Edmonton 6-2 and Vancouver 3-2, before heading home to down Chicago 6-2 and the New York Rangers 6-5.
The Penguins were unable to make it seven-in-a-row though, as they lost 3-2 to Ottawa just last night.
New York Islanders Form
New York enter this matchup in mixed for, having split their 10 games since the middle of January.
The Islanders hit-or-miss form began on the road as they won 1-0 in Edmonton, only to then suffer a 4-2 defeat in Calgary.
They responded with a 4-3 success in Vancouver, but failed to follow that up as they lost 4-1 in Seattle and 5-0 at home to Buffalo.
New York bounced back from those losses with their best run since the middle of December, beating Philadelphia 4-0 before winning back-to-back meetings with the New York Rangers, 5-2 at home and 2-1 on the road.
The Islanders have not won since though, following up a 4-3 home defeat to Nashville with a 4-1 defeat in Washington last night.
Verdict
Pittsburgh may have seen their recent streak end last night, but this is still one of the most in-form teams in the NHL.
