Alexander Zverev recently suffered a bagel set loss in Rome, and just a few days later he was forced to withdraw from Hamburg due to back issues, so there are certainly major concerns surrounding his current physical condition and overall level coming into this event.

In that context, seeing Zverev priced as such a heavy favorite does create some opportunities to explore the underdog side.

Bonzi Tests Zverev Consistency

  • Benjamin Bonzi has not won a French Open match since 2020.
  • He won three of his last five matches against Top 10 players.
  • Alexander Zverev holds a 9–1 first-round record at the French Open.
  • He has not suffered an opening-round defeat since Wimbledon last year.

This will be their first meeting.

Bonzi Seeking Main Tour Consistency

Benjamin Bonzi lost his top-100 ranking earlier this season after failing to defend important points from late 2025. That included his title in Metz along with strong runs in Adelaide and the Australian Open.

Since then, Bonzi has focused more on Challenger-level events to rebuild confidence and momentum. The move has brought some success, with four quarterfinal-or-better finishes including a runner-up result in Pau, although he has still struggled to carry that form consistently onto the main tour.

The Frenchman has played at French Open seven times in his career, but five of those campaigns ended either in qualifying or the opening round. His best performances came with second-round appearances in 2017 and 2020.

Zverev Returns To Familiar Grounds

Alexander Zverev suffered a disappointing defeat against Luciano Darderi in his most recent campaign in Rome. Zverev led 5-3 in the second set and later held four match points in the tiebreak but failed to convert any of them before losing the match.

The German has remained one of the most consistent players on tour since last season. However, one concern has been his inability to regularly convert deep runs into titles, a pattern that has continued in recent years.

Zverev has played eight tournaments this season and reached at least the quarterfinal stage in six of them while winning multiple matches in seven events overall. His last opening-round defeat at a Grand Slam came against Arthur Rinderknech in a five-set battle at Wimbledon Championships last year.

He has made 10 main-draw appearances at French Open and reached at least the quarterfinals in seven of his last eight visits. His only opening-round loss in Paris came against Fernando Verdasco back in 2017.

Verdict

Benjamin Bonzi is a capable local player with plenty of experience in these conditions and has the tools to take advantage if Zverev is not fully fit. Backing Bonzi to win over 10.5 games, cover the +8.5 games handicap, and win a set all look like worthwhile options here.
