Zizou Bergs has not looked fully convincing physically in recent weeks and recently withdrew from Hamburg citing an elbow injury. Against a player like Tomas Machac, who is already the superior player overall and especially stronger on clay, those physical concerns could become a major issue.

Clay Battle Awaits Both

  • Tomas Machac holds a 1–2 first-round record at the French Open.
  • He lost six of his last eight matches against Top 50 players.
  • Zizou Bergs is 1–1 in French Open opening rounds.
  • He owns a 3–8 career clay record against Top 50 players.

Machac Aims To Reverse Slump

Tomas Machac withdrew from his most recent tournament in Rome because of illness after defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets in the opening round. He has also dealt with several fitness problems earlier this season.

The 25-year-old enjoyed a strong start to 2026 by winning the title in Adelaide and reaching the third round at the Australian Open, putting him close to a return to the top 20 rankings. However, a knee injury suffered in Montpellier disrupted his momentum.

Since the Australian Open, Machac has played eight tournaments and recorded multiple wins only once, during his run in Monte Carlo last month. Those inconsistent results pushed him outside the top 40 rankings.

Machac has played at French Open five times in his career, but four of those appearances ended either in qualifying or the opening round. His only notable run came in 2024 when he reached the third round.

Bergs Fighting Through Tough Stretch

Zizou Bergs has also struggled with recurring fitness problems this season, issues that have significantly interrupted his progress. His last two tour-level appearances in Madrid and Rome both ended without a victory.

The Belgian has played 12 tournaments across all levels this year and managed multiple wins in only two of them, highlighted by a third-round run in Monte Carlo and a final appearance at the Aix-en-Provence Challenger.

Despite his inconsistency, Bergs still achieved a career-high ranking of No. 38 recently thanks to several solid wins in Masters-level events earlier in the season.

This marks his fifth appearance at French Open and only his third in the main draw. He reached the third round in 2024 before suffering a first-round exit last year.

Verdict

Machac should be in a strong position to take advantage and secure a comfortable victory here. Backing Machac to win outright, cover the -1.5 sets handicap, and the -5.5 games handicap all look like strong options in this matchup.
