FedEx St Jude Invitational Preview & Picks
The world's elite golfers converge in Tennessee to contest the FedEx St Jude Invitational, the first event of three in the FedEx Cup playoffs. Who will win the title at TPC Southwind?

Abraham Ancer will not be back to defend his title after his triumph in 2021.

Past and present major winners in the lineup at TPC Southwind include Cameron Smith, Matt Fitzpatrick, Justin Thomas, Scottie Scheffler, Keegan Bradley, Stewart Cink, Jason Day, Lucas Glover, Shane Lowry, Hideki Matsuyama, Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Jon Rahm, Justin Rose, Adam Scott, Webb Simpson, Jordan Spieth and Gary Woodland.

These are our four picks that could win the title this weekend.

Patrick Cantlay

Patrick Cantlay finished runner-up for the third time on the PGA Tour in 2022 when he came in T2 at the recent Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Before that, Cantlay placed 4th fourth at the Tournament of Champions, 9th at the American Express, T4 at the AT&T Pebble Beach and runner-up at the Phoenix Open.

The American's subsequent four events were average, finishing T33, MC, and T26 at the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play and T39.

The 30-year-old returned to his best with a winning performance at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, runner-up at the RBC Heritage, MC at the PGA Championship and T3 at the Memorial Tournament.

The world's 4th ranked golfer maintained his form, placing T14 at the US Open, T13 at the Travelers Championship, T4 at the Genesis Scottish Open and T8 at the 150th Open Championship.

He has featured three times at TPC Southwind, finishing T12 in 2019, T35 in 2020 and T23 last year.

Cantlay has been in superb touch on the greens and can convert into victory in Memphis this weekend.

Cameron Smith

Cameron Smith returned to winning ways when he bounced back to claim his first major title at the recent 150th Open Championship.

Before that, Smith won the Sentry Tournament of Champions, MC at the Sony Open in Hawaii, placed T4 at the Saudi International, finished T33 at the Genesis Invitational and won his second tournament at the Players Championship.

The Australian placed T3 at the Masters, MC at the RBC Heritage, T13 at the PGA Championship, T13 at the Memorial Tournament, T48 at the RBC Canadian Open, and MC at the US Open and T10 at the Scottish Open.

He placed T12 in 2019, T59 in 2020 and T5 in 2021 in the three times he has played at the FedEx St Jude Invitational.

Smith has gone with a less is more approach to his year on the golf course as he has won an impressive three tournaments in only 13 starts and has the form to land another in Tennessee.

Cameron Young

Cameron Young finished runner-up for the fourth time on the PGA Tour for 2022, placing T2 overall at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Before that, the 17th world-ranked player missed the cut at the Sony Open in Hawaii, followed by results of T40 at the American Express, T20 at the Farmers Insurance Open and T26 at the Phoenix Open.

The 25-year-old placed T2 at the Genesis Invitational, T16 at the Honda Classic and T13 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Young's form dropped in his following three tournaments, missing the cut at the Players Championship, finishing T35 at the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play and missing the cut at the Masters.

However, he rediscovered his form on the fairways and produced three top performances. He placed T3 at the RBC Heritage, T2 at the Wells Fargo Championship and T3 at the PGA Championship.

His subsequent three events were poor, finishing T60 at the Memorial Tournament and missing the cut at the US Open and Scottish Open before placing sole second at the 150th Open Championship.

The American is making his debut at the FedEx St Jude Invitational.

Young has been close to landing his maiden PGA Tour title numerous times this year and will have every chance to lift the trophy come Sunday.

Sungjae Im

Sungjae Im finished T2 at the Wyndham Championship last week, his second consecutive runner-up place after his T2 at the 3M Open.

Before that, the South Korean golfer placed T8 at the Tournament of Champions, MC at the Sony Open in Hawaii, T11 at the American Express and T6 at the Farmers Insurance Open.

His form was average in his next five starts on the PGA Tour, finishing T33 at the Genesis Invitational, MC, and T20 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and T55 and T35 at the WGC Dell Technologies.

The 24-year-old refound his touch, placing T8 at the Masters, T21 at the RBC Heritage, T15 at the Charles Schwab Challenge and T10 at the Memorial Tournament.

However, Im could not hold his form, missing the cut at the US Open and Genesis Scottish Open and finishing T81 at the 150th Open Championship.

He has played at the FedEx St Jude Invitational twice in the past, finishing T35 in 2020 and T46 in 2021.

Im has gone close in his last two tournaments and has the game to get over the finish line.

Verdict

Cantlay has gone close to landing another PGA Tour title and has every chance to do so in Tennessee.

Smith has the form to win his fourth tournament of the year this weekend.

Young has been knocking hard and can go all the way in Memphis.

Im has done nothing wrong in his last two starts and is the long-shot pick at TPC Southwind.
