Tour Championship Tips

Jon Rahm (Ranked 11th in FedEx Cup standings)

Jon Rahm did not start his 2021/2022 season well on the PGA Tour when he missed the cut at the Fortinet Championship, but his following six tournaments were excellent.

He placed second at the Tournament of Champions, T14 at the American Express, T3 at the Farmers Insurance Open, T10 at the Phoenix Open, T21 at the Genesis Invitational, and T17 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

The 27-year-old lacked consistency when he finished T55 at the Players Championship, T9 at the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play, and T27 at the Masters before returning to his best with victory at the Mexico Open.

The Spaniard's subsequent five results were mediocre to good, finishing T48 at the PGA Championship, T10 at the Memorial Tournament, T12 at the US Open, T55 at the Scottish Open, and T34 at the 150th Open Championship.

Rahm returned to the form he showed earlier in the season when he placed T5 at the FedEx St Jude Invitational and T8 at the BMW Championship last weekend.

He has an outstanding record at the Tour Championship, placing T7 in 2017, T11 in 2018, T12 in 2019, 4th in 2020 and runner-up last year.

Sam Burns (Ranked 5th in the FedEx Cup standings)

Sam Burns began his season in superb form with victory at the Sanderson Farms Championship and placing T14 at the Shriner's Childen's Open, T5 at the CJ Cup, T7 at the Houston Open, T3 at the Hero World Challenge, and T19 at the Tournament of Champions.

The American's form dipped, with three missed cut events in a row at the Farmers Insurance Open, Phoenix Open and the Genesis Invitational.

The 26-year-old bounced back to his best when he placed T9 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, T26 at the Players Championship, and won Valspar Championship for the second consecutive year.

His subsequent four tournaments were erratic, missing the cut at the Masters, finishing runner-up at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, missing the cut at Arnold Palmer Invitational, and placing T20 at the PGA Championship.

Burns returned to winning ways when he claimed his third tournament of the season at the Charles Schwab Challenge, followed by a T4 place at the RBC Canadian Open and T27 at the US Open.

His form slipped for the second time this season, with results of MC at the Travelers Championship, T66 at the Genesis Scottish Open and T42 at the 150th Open Championship.

His last two starts have been solid, placing T20 at the FedEx St Jude Invitational and T19 at the BMW Championship.

Burns finished T18 at the Tour Championship in 2021.

Cameron Smith (Ranked 6th in the FedEx Cup standings)

Cameron Smith played very well in his first three tournaments of the 2021/2022 season, placing T9 at the CJ Cup, T15 at the Houston Open and T4 at the RSM Classic.

The Australian captured his first tournament of 2022, winning the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

His next three starts were inconsistent as he missed the cut at the Sony Open in Hawaii, placed T4 at the Saudi International, and finished T33 at the Genesis Invitational before winning his second PGA Tour tournament of 2022 at the Players Championship.

The 29-year-old's results were good after that win, placing T3 at the Masters, MC at the RBC Heritage, T21 at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, T13 at the PGA Championship, T13 at the Memorial Tournament, T48 at the RBC Canadian Open, MC at the US Open and T10 at the Scottish Open.

He secured the first major title of his career and the third tournament of his season when he lifted the claret jug at the 150th Open Championship at St Andrews.

Smith has featured at the Tour Championship three times, finishing 20th in 2018, T24 in 2020 and T14 last year.

Matt Fitzpatrick (Ranked 15th in the FedEx Cup standings)

Matt Fitzpatrick has had an exceptional season on the PGA Tour, with four top five places, five top ten finishes, three top twenty results and winning the US Open in 20 tournaments.

The 27-year-old had a mediocre beginning to his season, finishing T30 at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship and T64 at the World Wide Technology Championship before a solid T12 at the Hero World Challenge.

Fitzpatrick placed T6 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, T10 at the Phoenix Open, T9 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, MC at the Players Championship, T5 at the Valspar Championship, T18 at the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play, T14 at the Masters and MC at the RBC Heritage.

Since that result, the Englishman has not looked back, producing top performances one after the other on the golf course.

The Englishman came close to landing his maiden PGA Tour title by placing T2 at the Wells Fargo Championship, T5 at the PGA Championship, MC at the Memorial Tournament and T10 at the RBC Canadian Open before getting over the finish line by winning the US Open.

Fitzpatrick continued to play well as he finished T6 at the Genesis Scottish Open, T21 at the Open Championship, T5 at the FedEx St Jude Invitational and T48 at the recent BMW Championship.

Fitzpatrick is making his debut at the Tour Championship.

Verdict

Rahm was runner-up at this event last year and has the form to go one better.

Burns has lifted three trophies this season and looked back to form in his last two tournament starts.

Smith has won three times in 2022 and will want to finish with a fourth at the Tour Championship.

Fitzpatrick cracked his maiden win in America, and his consistency on the golf course will put him in contention at the East Lake Golf Club.
