St Louis Cardinals at Los Angeles Dodgers Picks & Betting Tips

St Louis (90-72) is making its third straight postseason appearance and is appearing in its second straight NL wild card game.

The Cardinals are 7-3 in last 10 games, 45-36 on the road and vs. 66--59 RHPs.

Wainwright has pitched extremely well in the second half of the season, posting a 10-2 record and a 2.50 ERA along with a 0.95 WHIP and .209 BAA. The 40-year-old has allowed two or fewer runs in eight of his last 11 starts. He allowed four runs on seven hits over 8.1 innings in a 5-4 home win over the Dodgers on Sept. 8.

Los Angeles (106-56), which tied the franchise’s win mark, is in the playoffs for the ninth straight season although this is the first time during the stretch that the Dodgers failed to win the division.

The Dodgers are 9-1 in their last 10 games, 58-23 at home, and 73-42 vs. RHPs.

Scherzer has been belted the last two starts, giving up 17 hits along with 11 runs – 3 homers – while striking out 10 and walking 1. Still, the 37-year-old is 3-0 with a 2.29 ERA and a .197 BAA. He is 2-0 against the Cardinals this year allowing 10 hits and just 1 runs while striking out 22 and walking 1 in 14 innings of work.

Head To Head

The Cardinals have won two straight in the series, although the teams split their four-game set at Busch Stadium.

Los Angeles won the season-series 4-3, outscoring the Cardinals 42-20.

The Cardinals averaged 2.9 runs while compiling an .587 OPS against the Dodgers.

The Dodgers averaged 6.0 runs while compiling an .740 OPS against the Cardinals this year.

St Louis Cardinals Form

St Louis dropped its last two games to the Chicago Cubs this past weekend. All three games of the series were decided by a single run.

The Cardinals have lost three of five overall and are 23-9 over the last 32 contests, outscoring their opponents 169-123.

The Cardinals’ offense runs have produced 5.2 runs over the last 32 games with a slash line of .262/.319/.480.

St Louis’ pitching staff posted a 3.18 ERA, WHIP and .240 batting average against since Sept. 1

Los Angeles Dodgers Form

Los Angeles swept NL Central division champion Milwaukee this past weekend, outscoring the Brewers 24-12.

The Dodgers have won seven in a row and are 22-7 over their last 29, outscoring their opponents 154-97.

Los Angeles’ offense has averaged 5.3 runs over the 29 contests while compiling a slash line of .252/.327/.461.

The Dodgers’ pitching staff has a 3.73 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and a .211 batting average against over this stretch.

Verdict

This game features two of the hottest teams in the majors. It also features two veteran pitchers who are among the top 15 pitchers in MLB, so expect a pitching duel. The Dodgers offense has been much better than the Cardinals this year. However, the Dodgers will be without 1B Max Muncy (UCL) and LHP Clayton Kershaw (10-day IL) for the foreseeable future.

Wainwright is in fantastic form and he has pitched well in 28 postseason appearances. However, Wainwright has not pitched well on the road (3.58 ERA) this year and is 1-3 with a 4.30 ERA in his career at Dodger Stadium.

While the Cardinals have been raking it at the plate since Sept. 1, they have cooled off over the past week although the Cards have compiled a .740 OPS during this 7-day stretch. They have hit well on the road (.246 avg) but have struggled against right-handed starters.

Scherzer, who is 7-0 in 11 games with the Dodgers, has been one of the top pitchers in all of baseball this year and he has also a lot of postseason experience. Scherzer also has been fabulous at Dodger Stadium (2.17 ERA) and during night contests (2.90 ERA) this year. Additionally, he has held current members of the Cardinals to a .130 batting average and .327 OPS over his career.

The Dodgers have been swinging the bat extremely well recently and they hit well at Dodger Stadium (.794 OPS). The Dodgers have struggled a little bit against right-handed starters this year, however, several members – led by Trea Turner, Justin Turner, and AJ Pollock – have had tremendous success against Wainwright.
