Jared Cannonier’s rise up the middleweight ladder was halted by his first defeat in this weight class.
Cannonier moved down from light-heavyweight after back-to-back losses and the move paid off quickly.
He stopped David Branch with strikes 39 seconds into the second four of their November 2018 bout.
He then finished Anderson Silva with leg kicks in the closing moments of the first round to make it back-to-back wins at 185lbs.
Cannonier looked to be forcing his way in into the title picture when he impressively knocked out Jack Hermansson in the second round in September 2019.
However, his momentum stalled last October when he was bested over five rounds by former champion Robert Whittaker.
Cannonier has a 13-5 professional MMA record with nine wins coming by KO/TKO and two by decision.
Kelvin Gastelum Form
Battles with the welterweight limit forced Kelvin Gastelum to move up to middleweight in December 2016.
Since then he has fought a who’s who of fighters but the results have largely been negative.
A TKO win over Vitor Belfort was overturned to a no-contest when Gastelum failed a drug test.
In his next fight he was submitted by Chris Weidman, but he rebounded to knockout out Michael Bisping, who was fighting just weeks after losing the middleweight title.
Gastelum added another big name to his record when he beat Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza by split decision in May 2018.
However, since that night it has pretty much been all downhill for him with four defeats coming in five fights.
Gastelum suffered back-to-back decision defeats to Israel Adesanya and Darren Till in 2019.
He was then submitted by Jack Hermansson in the first 78 seconds of their fight in July of last year.
Gastelum rebounded to earn a decision win over Ian Heinisch in February, but he made a quick return to losing ways by dropping a decision to ex-champ Robert Whittaker in April.
That loss leaves Gastelum with a 16-7, 1 NC record, with six wins coming by KO/TKO and four by submission.
He has been submitted twice in his career, but Gastelum has never been knocked out.
