Montreal Canadiens Form
Montreal came back from the brink against Toronto to stun the Maple Leafs in Round 1, and then impressively dispatched Winnipeg and Vegas to meet the Stanley Cup Finals.
They must now come back from the brink and win four straight games to win the Stanley Cup.
Goalie Carey Price starred in the upset of Vegas in the semi-finals, but he was powerless to prevent Tampa Bay from running away with 5-1 Game 1 victory.
The Canadiens produced a much better showing in the second game, only to come up against an inspired goalie. It was the biggest reason that they lost 3-1.
That was not the case in Game 3 as they struggled to lay a glove on Tampa in a 6-3 defeat, but they did manage to best the Lightning in a must-win Game 4.
Montreal twice surrendered a lead in regulation time, but an OT strike from Josh Anderson sent this series back to Tampa for Game 5.
The Canadiens find themselves in a must-win situation once again and they must win without Jonathan Drouin (personal), who remains out indefinitely.
Tampa Bay Lightning Form
New York proved to be a tough nut to crack in the semi-finals, but Tampa Bay could make straightforward work Montreal in the Stanley Cup.
Nikita Kucherov scored twice and set up another as the Lightning ran out 5-1 winners in Game 1, with three of Tampa’s goals coming in an emphatic third-period performance.
They made it back-to-back wins in very different circumstances in Game 2 as Andrei Vasilevskiy made 42 saves and Blake Coleman scored a crucial buzzer-beating goal in a 3-1 win.
But they were back to their clinical best in Game 3 as they raced to a 2-0 lead and never looked back in a convincing 6-3 victory.
Tampa then missed out on the opportunity to complete the sweep in Montreal. The Lightning twice came from behind in that one, but their resolve was ended by an overtime goal.
Tampa now have an opportunity to clinch the Stanley Cup at home on Wednesday night.
They could be without Alex Killorn, who missed Games 3 & 4 for ‘undisclosed’ reasons, and they will definitely be without Anders Nilsson (concussion) and Marian Gaborik (back).
