How We Pick NHL Games
Our NHL picks come from the Hockey loving team at the ExpertPicks desk.
In hockey, the goalie can change everything. We wait for the starting goalies to be confirmed where we can, then look at shot quality, special teams, rest and travel. Hockey has a lot of close, low-scoring games, so the price matters more than the record. A good team at a short price is often a worse bet than an average team at plus money.
If the starting goalie changes after we post, the line usually moves. Check the bet again before you place it.
How to Bet on the NHL
Moneyline - Pick the winner. At most sportsbooks the standard moneyline includes overtime and the shootout.
Puck line - Hockey's spread, almost always 1.5 goals. The favorite at -1.5 must win by 2 or more. The underdog at +1.5 can lose by 1 and still cover. Empty-net goals late in the game often decide puck lines.
Total - Bet on whether the combined goals go over or under the line, usually 5.5 or 6.5. At most books, a shootout winner counts as one goal for the total.
Regulation (three-way) line - A bet on the result after 60 minutes only, with the tie as a third option. It pays more because a game that goes to overtime counts as a tie.
Player props - Shots on goal, points, or an anytime goal scorer.
