Cannonier enjoyed a good run of form between November 2018 and July 2022 that put him in contention.
‘The Killa Gorilla’ moved down to middleweight after a knockout loss to Dominick Reyes and made an immediate splash by stopping David Branch in the second round.
The 38-year-old American than followed that up by stopping legendary former champion Anderson Silva with strikes in the very first round.
Cannonier made it three TKO wins in a row when he stopped Jack Hermansson in the second round, but his rise was temporarily halted by a decision loss to ex-champion Robert Whittaker.
He rebounded in his next outing though, besting Kelvin Gastelum over five rounds, and in his next outing he earned a title shot.
Cannonier knocked out Derek Brunson back in February to secure a meeting with then-champion Israel Adesanya, but he failed to take his big chance as he lost by unanimous decision.

Strickland recorded a unanimous decision win over Krzysztof Jotko in a three-round fight, and then got the nod from the judges after going five rounds with Uriah Hall.

There was no need for the judges in Strickland’s last fight though, as he was knocked out in the first round by Alex Pereira.
Since then Pereira has gone on to win the UFC middleweight title from Israel Adesanya.
