Liverpool vs Arsenal Predictions

Liverpool face Arsenal at Anfield in a potentially entertaining EPL encounter this weekend.

The Reds edged past Chelsea in the EFL Cup on Wednesday, while Arsenal look to bounce back from a shock cup exit at Fleetwood.

BTTS is my first choice, while I also fancy the hosts to at least avoid defeat.

Goals Expected in Anfield Showdown

  • Liverpool have seen BTTS in 4 of their last 5 matches
  • Liverpool are unbeaten in 13 of their last 14 matches (competitive fixtures)
  • Liverpool have seen BTTS in 6 of their last 8 matches against Arsenal
  • Arsenal failed to win 8 of their last 9 matches against Liverpool
  • Arsenal have seen BTTS in their last 2 away matches
  • Arsenal failed to win 3 of their last 4 away matches

Liverpool Hold Recent H2H Advantage

Liverpool and Arsenal have met 18 times since 2020. The Reds won seven of those encounters, while Arsenal claimed only three victories. Eight matches finished level.

Liverpool claimed a 1-0 win in their most recent encounter at Anfield last year.

Liverpool Edge Chelsea in Midweek Cup Clash

Liverpool return to Premier League action after a penalty shootout victory against Chelsea in the EFL Cup earlier this week.

Morgan Rogers put the visitors ahead from the spot before Cody Gakpo levelled with another penalty three minutes later.

With the contest level at 1-1 after 90 minutes, Liverpool booked their place in the quarter-finals with a 6-5 penalty shootout success.

Andoni Iraola's side registered fewer shots (10-11) but recorded a higher xG total (2.78-1.79) and created more big chances (4-2).

The Reds have bounced back well from a disappointing 3-0 home defeat against Manchester City earlier this month. Liverpool won four and drew one of five fixtures, with 16 goals scored in that period.

Defensive vulnerabilities remain a major concern, though. Iraola's men conceded three goals in Champions League victories against LASK (6-3) and Villarreal (4-3), while failing to keep a clean sheet in nine of 13 matches this season.

A solid start to their EPL campaign sees the Reds sit fourth in the division with 15 points picked up from their first eight Premier League fixtures.

Arsenal Suffer Shock Fleetwood Cup Exit

Arsenal arrive at Anfield after a stunning EFL Cup defeat against League Two Fleetwood Town on Tuesday. Aaron Loupalo-Bi gave the hosts a shock lead before Viktor Gyokeres levelled the tie.

With the contest all-square at 1-1 after 90 minutes, Fleetwood secured the biggest win in their history with a 5-3 shootout win.

The Gunners dominated the contest, registering significantly more shots (26-3) and a much higher xG total (2.28-0.34). However, their lack of urgency in the final third proved costly, with Max Dowman's red card compounding a frustrating night for the Premier League champions.

After a strong start to the season, Arsenal have now failed to win three of their last four away matches, including a 3-0 Premier League defeat at Brighton.

That defeat ended a run of 15 consecutive matches in which the Gunners had scored. Arteta's side have since netted 11 goals in six fixtures, including an entertaining 2-2 Champions League draw at Bayern Munich.

Recent results against Liverpool have been disappointing. Arsenal failed to win any of their last five meetings, while they have not won an EPL game at Anfield since 2012.

Liverpool vs Arsenal Team News

Liverpool: (4-2-3-1) Alisson Becker; Ronald Araujo, Jeremy Jacquet, Virgil van Dijk, Milos Kerkez; Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister; Cody Gakpo, Florian Wirtz, Bradley Barcola; Alexander Isak.

Head coach Andoni Iraola is expected to recall several first-team regulars following Wednesday's cup victory. Alisson Becker and Alexander Isak are among those set for a return to the starting XI.

Victor Munoz, Giovanni Leoni, Conor Bradley, Hugo Ekitike, Dominik Szoboszlai and Jeremie Frimpong are expected to remain sidelined this weekend.

Iraola spoke to Sky Sports after Liverpool's EFL Cup win against Chelsea.

"It was a level game. Not a lot of chances for both teams. We are really happy with the performances of the players.

On youngsters playing: "They were very good against Spurs in the first round, and they are very good players. We are confident, and they have shown they are at a very good level. They helped us.

"You have to keep the concentration levels and the control. Giorgi (Mamardashvili) has improved at stopping a lot of the shots.

"Three at home in a row is very important. We were struggling at home in the league, but now we go against Arsenal on Sunday."

Arsenal: (4-2-3-1) David Raya; Ben White, Ezri Konsa, Gabriel Magalhaes, Myles Lewis-Skelly; Declan Rice, Mikel Merino; Noni Madueke, Martin Odegaard, Eberechi Eze; Viktor Gyokeres.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is also expected to make several changes after rotating his squad in Tuesday's cup defeat. David Raya, Declan Rice and Gabriel Magalhaes are expected to return to the starting XI.

Bukayo Saka and William Saliba remain injury concerns, while Max Dowman faces a suspension following his dismissal against Fleetwood.

Arteta refused to criticise his squad after the shock EFL Cup defeat.

"I cannot fault at all the attitude of the players. I haven't seen anyone not doing what is required at this level.

“But, obviously, we insisted so much, we have so much of the ball, so many chances, so many shots, and if you want the margins to be bigger than going to the penalties, obviously, you need to capitalise on that. And we didn't. And football is about that.”

Verdict

Liverpool have picked up form in recent weeks, while Arsenal have not been at their best in recent away fixtures.

BTTS should prove a solid choice, while I also fancy the hosts to pick up a point or more.
