Liverpool vs Man City Predictions

Liverpool host Man City in a blockbuster clash as Premier League action resumes after the international break.

City face a hostile reception at Anfield, with the pressure firmly on following the damning verdict in their Premier League case.

BTTS looks likely, while I also fancy the hosts to score at least two goals in front of a fiery Kop on Sunday.

Goals Appeal in Anfield Showdown

  • Liverpool scored 2+ goals in 5 of their last 7 matches
  • Liverpool have seen BTTS & over 2.5 goals in 3 of their last 4 home matches
  • Man City have seen over 2.5 goals in their last 3 matches against Liverpool
  • Man City conceded 3 goals in their last match

City Hold Recent H2H Edge

Liverpool and Man City have met on 17 occasions since 2020. Man City won seven games, while Liverpool picked up five wins. Five games finished level.

City claimed a dominant 4-0 victory in an FA Cup quarter-final tie in April, with Erling Haaland scoring a hat-trick.

City won all three meetings last season, including a 2-1 victory at Anfield.

Liverpool Return After Bournemouth Victory

Liverpool return to Anfield after a narrow 1-0 victory at Bournemouth in their last Premier League outing three weeks ago.

Alexander Isak scored the only goal as Andoni Iraola marked his return to his former club with a hard-fought but deserved win.

Final match stats reflected a tight contest on the south coast, although Liverpool edged the shot count (12-9) and finished with a higher xG (1.65 to 0.79).

Andoni Iraola's side remain unbeaten in the league, taking nine points from their first five fixtures.

After failing to win their first two games under Iraola’s charge, the Reds have since claimed victories in four of their last five fixtures.

Liverpool scored at least twice in three of their last four Anfield outings, including wins against Tottenham (3-1) and Atletico Madrid (2-1).

Coming into this weekend’s showdown, Iraola’s charges sit sixth in the Premier League, six points behind Man City.

City Face Hostile Anfield

Man City travel to Anfield after an entertaining 5-3 victory against Sunderland in their last Premier League fixture.

Enzo Fernandez and Rayan Cherki scored before Antoine Semenyo struck twice, with Erling Haaland securing victory in the second half. Brian Brobbey scored a hat-trick for Sunderland as the visitors repeatedly exposed the home defence.

Enzo Maresca's side maintained their perfect league start with five successive EPL victories recorded. City won seven games in a row across all competitions since their Charity Shield defeat against Arsenal.

Still, that positive form has been overshadowed by a damning verdict in their long-running Premier League case, with City found guilty of 114 of 115 charges.

The under-fire Citizens now head to Anfield to face a particularly hostile atmosphere against their EPL rivals.

Before beating Sunderland, Maresca’s men picked up wins against Norwich (5-0) in the EFL Cup and Man Utd (1-0) in the Premier League.

While usually strong defensively, City showed serious vulnerabilities against Sunderland. The visitors have failed to keep a clean sheet in four of their eight games this season.

Liverpool vs Man City Team News

Liverpool (4-2-3-1): Alisson Becker; Ronald Araujo, Virgil van Dijk, Jeremy Jacquet, Milos Kerkez; Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister; Rio Ngumoha, Florian Wirtz, Bradley Barcola; Lewis Koumas.

Andoni Iraola has some selection headaches to overcome this weekend. Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo could miss out after both suffered injuries during the international break.

Hugo Ekitike, Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni remain sidelined while Federico Chiesa is also likely to miss out.

In-form Hungarian playmaker Dominik Szoboszlai is expected to feature despite starting all four of Hungary’s Nations League fixtures.

Man City: (4-2-3-1) Gianluigi Donnarumma; Matheus Nunes, Ruben Dias, Marc Guehi, Josko Gvardiol; Elliot Anderson, Enzo Fernandez; Rayan Cherki, Iliman Ndiaye, Antoine Semenyo; Erling Haaland.

Enzo Maresca has some selection concerns for the trip to Anfield. Phil Foden is suspended after his red card against Man United, while Antoine Semenyo is a doubt with an ankle problem.

Nico O'Reilly also requires assessment after withdrawing from the England squad.

Erling Haaland is expected to lead the attack, with Rayan Cherki and Iliman Ndiaye providing support from the flanks.

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of Sunday's trip to Anfield, Erling Haaland urged City's fans to stick together and remain positive following the guilty verdict.

"I care a lot about this place. I spent my first four years here; it's a special place for us. I care a lot about City and the fans. I am a fan myself. I feel with them."

"The fans will have a good time on Sunday - we have to stick together. We have to stay with each other and stay positive. No matter what happens in life, we always have to smile. Stay positive, look ahead, try to win football games and enjoy the situation."

"We have to stick together and spread the love to each other. Enjoy the ride and smile."

Verdict

A dramatic contest could be on the cards, with Liverpool sure to give their under-fire opponents a “warm” welcome at Anfield this weekend.

I have my stake on BTTS, with Liverpool over 1.5 team goals also backed.
