Sabalenka Seeks Redemption After Shock Beijing Exit

Aryna Sabalenka kicked off the Asian swing with a disappointing campaign in Beijing, where she suffered a shock straight-sets defeat to Nikola Bartůňková in the third round. She will now be looking to bounce back with a deep run in Wuhan.

Sabalenka reached four consecutive finals and won three titles during the first three months of the season, but she struggled to maintain that level in the following months.

Over the last seven months, she has reached just one final, at the US Open, while most of her other campaigns have ended in the quarterfinals or earlier. Her inconsistent results have also contributed to her recent loss of the world No. 1 ranking.

The Belarusian will now aim to finish the season strongly in Wuhan, where she has competed four times before, winning the title on three occasions and reaching the semifinals last year.

Ann Li Looks to Extend Her Recent Hard-Court Revival

Ann Li advanced to the second round after her opponent, Camila Osorio, retired while trailing by a set and 0-3. The victory means Li has matched her result from last year's Wuhan campaign.

The American has played 15 hard-court events this year but has recorded multiple main-draw wins only four times. Encouragingly, three of those runs have come in her recent tournaments, including a semifinal appearance in Monterrey, a third-round finish at the US Open and a fourth-round run in Beijing. She will now look to carry that momentum into Wuhan.

Li has also reached the semifinals in Strasbourg, the quarterfinals in Rouen and the fourth round in Madrid. These results have helped her remain around the top 30 in the rankings despite struggling for consistency throughout the season.

Verdict

Despite her recent struggles, Sabalenka's impressive history in Wuhan gives her a clear edge. Li has shown encouraging form in recent tournaments, but she faces a tough challenge against the three-time champion.
