Gauff Returns to WTA Finals After Strong Second-Half Revival

Coco Gauff has taken a break following a demanding season, playing only one event since the US Open. She also decided to skip her title defence in Wuhan recently.

After a strong start to the year, the American dropped significant ranking points during the clay-court swing, including an early exit at Roland Garros that prevented her from defending her title.

However, Gauff made up for those losses with a strong run in the following months. She reached the semifinals at Wimbledon, Toronto and the US Open, while also winning the title in Cincinnati.

This is her fifth consecutive appearance at the WTA Finals. Gauff won the title in 2024 and reached the semifinals in 2023, but her campaign ended in the group stage last year.

Pegula Brings Remarkable Consistency Into Fifth WTA Finals

Like her opponent, Jessica Pegula has taken a break from tennis in recent weeks following a demanding schedule. She has played only one event since the US Open, suffering an opening-round defeat in Wuhan.

Pegula has been one of the most consistent players on tour this year. She has competed in 16 events in 2026 and reached at least the quarterfinals in 12 of them, including a title in Dubai and semifinal appearances at the Australian Open and US Open.

The 32-year-old has also produced strong results on North American hard courts. She has played seven events in the region this year and won at least two matches in every appearance, reaching the quarterfinals or better in all seven.

This is Pegula's fifth consecutive appearance at the WTA Finals. She reached the semifinals in 2025 and the final in 2023, while her other two appearances ended in the group stage.

Verdict

Both players have been impressive on North American hard courts, making this a closely matched contest. However, Gauff’s two victories over Pegula this year and unbeaten record against fellow Americans give her a slight advantage.
