Fernandez Looks To Build On Hard-Court Revival
Leylah Fernandez defeated Elise Mertens from a set down to reach the second round in Ningbo, winning 2-6, 6-3, 7-5. After losing an early lead and trailing 3-5 in the deciding set, the Canadian won four consecutive games to complete the comeback.
Fernandez struggled to produce consistent results on hard courts earlier this season and did not win multiple matches on the surface until the North American swing. Her three quarterfinal appearances in the first seven months of the year all came on clay.
However, she has improved considerably on hard courts in recent months, reaching the third round at the US Open, the fourth round in Toronto and Wuhan, and won the title in Singapore. She will now look to build on that progress in Ningbo.

Sasnovich Seeks A Rare Deep Run At Tour Level
Aliaksandra Sasnovich began her Ningbo campaign with a straight-sets victory over former champion Daria Kasatkina, winning 6-4, 6-2. Despite losing her serve twice, the Belarusian established an early lead in both sets and maintained control to secure a comfortable win.
Sasnovich has played 20 tour-level events this year, but apart from reaching the third round in Brisbane at the start of the season, she has struggled to win multiple matches at this level. Most of her campaigns have ended in qualifying or the opening round.
She has also reached the quarterfinals twice in 2026, with both runs coming at WTA 125 events in Paris and Suzhou. Sasnovich will now aim to reach her first tour-level quarterfinal since Cluj-Napoca last year.

Verdict
Fernandez’s improving form and stronger record against lower-ranked players give her the edge, while Sasnovich’s inconsistent tour-level results could make it difficult for her to progress in Ningbo.
