Stefanos Tsitsipas has shown steady improvement over the past couple of months, putting together some encouraging results as he looks to regain his best level. His progress, combined with his greater experience and stronger hard-court credentials compared to Luciano Darderi, makes the Greek a compelling option in this matchup.

Tsitsipas Bids To Rediscover His Winning Touch

  • Darderi has never won multiple main-draw matches on tour in Asia.
  • He has a 3–4 record in opening-round matches at Masters events.
  • Tsitsipas has a 4–1 record in second-round matches at the Shanghai Masters.
  • He has failed to win multiple main-draw matches in five of his last six events.

Darderi Seeks To Rebound From Tokyo Setback

Luciano Darderi kicked off his Asian swing last week in Tokyo, where he defeated Casper Ruud in the opening round before suffering a disappointing loss to Kyrian Jacquet in his next match. He is now making his third appearance in Shanghai and will look to defend the third-round points he earned last year.

The Italian has produced impressive results across all levels of the tour this year, recording 10 quarterfinal-or-better finishes along with fourth-round appearances at the Australian Open and US Open. These results helped him achieve a career-high ranking of No. 16 a few months ago.

Last year, after the US Open, he played seven tour-level events and won only two main-draw matches. This gives him a valuable opportunity to improve his ranking in the coming weeks.

Tsitsipas Looks To Capitalise On His Shanghai Experience

Stefanos Tsitsipas defeated Kimmer Coppejans in straight sets to reach the second round at the Shanghai Masters, winning 6-3, 7-5. He did not face a break point and broke his opponent twice to secure the victory.

The Greek lost significant ranking points earlier this year, including after failing to defend his title in Dubai, which cost him his place in the top 50. However, he produced encouraging results in recent months by winning the title in Gstaad and reaching the fourth round at the US Open, helping him return to the top 50.

The 28-year-old did not play a tour-level match after the US Open last year, giving him an opportunity to boost his ranking in the coming weeks.

He has enjoyed a solid record in Shanghai, reaching at least the third round in four of his five appearances. He will look to continue that success this week.
